Would this network work?

Featured Replies

1) Main PC - high spec, will do 99% of my work. Hopefully will have a network card.

2) Current PC - lower spec, but won't do much soon. Has a network card

3) a "spare" PC - Pentium 133 ;) But its got a network card. :D

Could I hardwire all three into the Netgear router and have them all folding. ;)

Yes, I'm guessing you will put the broadband connection thrugh the router?

It will slow your connection down no end though.

Don't see why not. I have a desktop, a wireless laptop and printer on my router and I have also plugged in additional laptop on occasions. They don't seem to slow each other down unless I am up/downloading at the same time. What do you mean by 'folding'?

He means that SETI search thing going on on here.

Oh Jason, if you don't have any cables, I've got loads here doing nothing that you are welcome to.

Oh, I thought he meant 'fold' as in 'crash'! They did something similar to this several years ago for analysing data from NASA.

Yeah - My Netgear is a modem router anyway - two laptops which I don't use also use the wireless aspect of the router to work, but I thought as there were 4 ports on the back to hardwire too, why not use a few. I will be needing some cables - Is this Cat5 stuff? Guess I need two way stuff if I want to move files from one PC to another? :D

The printer will be hardwired to the new PC although there is still a second copy down in my taskbar which is the network driver, so the two laptops can print should they wish.

Internet connection is 1MB and I've not noticed a significant drop in download speed whilst both laptops are busy on the net too. ;)

Yep, Cat5 is all you need. Work out your lengths needed and let me know.

It'll be damn short. 2m would be more than enough. I hope to get all three PCs working in this corner of my room. Its likely to be a case of working the two lesser PCs as "monitor on top of tower" style though.

Lucky I have some six into one extensions from Makro for the extra power needed...

Not as bad as mine then.

I has a 4 port router, it sits on top of the full tower, next to it is the midi tower and 30m away is another PC. Took blinking ages to wire that PC up with all the 'Ooooh, can't put that wire there' from my mum.

I just thought... If I were to setup my older PC downstairs somewhere I might be able to get it connected wirelessy...

Might just save the cost of the wireless card and find room up here. :D

You can never have enough power points:D

I've just taken a pic of my desk for this thread. I have a DG834 Router connected to two pc's and a linksys wrt54g setup as a wireless access point for downstairs computer. It allows me to turn on wireless when needed (rarely).

Your two computers will swap files easily if running same OS (eg XP), a bit more tricky with different OS (eg 2000 and XP) or atleast that is what i found.

Anyway, big picture time:D
