Help with bleeding my clutch

Featured Replies

Hello All

I am just about to embark on bleeding my Octavia 1.9 TDi clutch. I have my haynes manual and Gunsons Eezibleed kit, and this forum of course!

Just wondered if anyone could give an amateur a few tips....

Haynes says to use the bleed screw on the slave cylinder. Is this best accessed from the engine compartment, or jack up the car and get underneath?

How much clutch fluid is generally needed to bleed the system?

If you have any other helpful suggestions, then they will be gratefully received!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Access to the bleed nipple on the slave cylinder can be easily accessed from above. There are also a couple of bleed nipples on the master cylinder, but I guess you need not worry about them unless the fluid level has dropped really low.

There won't be much fluid in the clutch system - short pipe run across the engine bay.

Not sure about diesel but my vrs i can bleed clutch without taking anything off or out of engine bay,

Easy job to do and can tell if cars a few years old and its never been done afterwards,

I didn't bother doing it when i did my clutch as i just unbolted cylinder off gearbox and tide it up out of way

Well, I had a go, and I must be doing something wrong.

I pressure tested the kit and it seemed to be OK. I loosened the bleed nipple on the slave cylinder(after googling the part number on it to make absolutely sure it was the slave cylinder!!)connected the kit up and then attached to the spare tyre.

Fluid was pushed up from the gunsons reservoir and into the clutch fluid reservoir, but absolutely nothing came out of the bleed nipple. Then after a bit, the pressure seemed to back up and loosened the cap on the clutch fluid reservoir and fluid started to squirt out.

Why did nothing come out of the slave cylinder bleed? Should I have done something else? Have I got a dud kit?

Any help gratefully received, thanks...

As above why did you disconnect it?

The bleed nipple may well be blocked buddy? Try removing it totally and cleaning it out? Blowing through it and plenty of brake and clutch cleaner. It's just a thought

How far did u loosen it? Needs a good turn

You need to loosen it quite a bit.

Thanks, maybe I didn't loosen it enough, thought I did, I gave it a fair few turns in the relatively cramped space.

I'll try taking the bleed nipple off completely and cleaning it.

Tech1e - you asked me why I disconnected it - I didn't disconnect anything, the cap loosened itself and came off under the pressure, is that what you meant? I left everything connected. Nothing came out of the bleed nipple when I connected the black pipe to the spare tyre. Fluid went up the clear pipe into the reservoir as expected, but nothing came out of the bleed nipple (which I may not have loosened enough)That was when the the cap on the reservoir loosened and fluid started to leak out around the seal. It seemed to go on nice and tightly to start with and when I tested the pressure initially without any fluid as recommended, all seemed fine. If it came off this easily under pressure, could it be the wrong size?

I am going to try getting in touch with gunsons as recommended by local motor factors, and see if they can send me a different size cap.

So, just to clarify, if I clean the bleed nipple and then make sure it is loosened enough, should I get fluid out of it when the pressure is applied, without having to push the clutch pedal, or loosening any of the master cylinder bleeds?

Sorry to keep on, but I am determined to get this working!!

Thanks.

If Ur using a pressure bleeder then yes u should get fluid from the nipple.

Just out of curiousity where are you located am just wondering if maybe someone is local and could give you a hand with it

Did you let the air pressure in the spare go down to 15psi before connecting it? If not, that may be the reason the cap is coming off the reservoir.

All you need to do is loosen the bleed nipple on the slave cylinder. No need to push the pedal or open the the master cylinder bleed nipples.

Yes, I let the pressure down, about 14psi according to my footpump. I did worry that I'd let it down too much.

I think the problem is a combination of the cap not fitting properly and the bleed nipple not undone enough, although I thought I had opened that sufficiently. The gunson kit described drilling a hole in the existing cap and using this, but the cap on my reservoir has something else attached to it (showing my ignorance here, sorry) so not an option.

Anyone else had problems with the gunsons supplied caps not fitting the reservoir? I did wonder about winding some ptfe tape, or something similar, around the threads of the clutch fluid reservoir to make the seal a bit tighter, or is that a really stupid idea...?

Do you have an assistant there. N do it the old fashioned way of pumping the pedal

The old fashioned (at least with the brakes) always seems to end in tears!

Ended up calling the AA as nothing worked. He couldn't do anything with it either, so its now been towed to the garage to see what they can make of it!!

Thanks for all your help and suggestions, hope it can be of help to someone else.

By the way, I found quite a useful video on youtube about reverse bleeding. The link is

Thanks again

Hi chaps,

Sorry for opening this old thread up but I have looked at all the posts I can for changing brake fluid and bleeding the clutch. New to Skoda after being a saab man for 20 years. I now have a 62plate Octavia mark 2 1.6TDI.I always do all my own servicing even though the body is telling me not to.

Car has never had brake fluid change so going to do this shortly with an eezibleed. However my confusion lies with bleeding the clutch. I presume that once I bleed and change the brake fluid I then do the clutch as well. I am assuming the brake fluid reservoir is for both brake and clutch so I don't need to look for a separate clutch reservoir to attaché the eezibleed system to.

So question is where do I need to look for bleeding the clutch .Is there a slave cylinder with a bleed nipple on it I can access? On reading here there is but I could do with some help finding it and any other useful tips or pictures.

Many thanks David

Top marks for actually using the search function for a question, rather than opening up what could be the 20th thread on the same point.   This however is the Mk1 Octavia corner of the forum, if you go to the Mk2 section and when in it then use the search bar at the top, it will just search that section. If you use the search function from the forums main page, it will search across all models and years. Shouldn't take long for someone in there to sort you out http://www.briskoda.net/forums/forum/28-skoda-octavia-ii-2004-2013/
