ABI list of Insurers regarding Winter tyres

Insurance firms will still try and charge you more if you change your wheels in the winter, even if you're 'downgrading' to steels.

Please note, that isn't the case with all insurers, via our specialist schemes, we would most certainly not charge any extra. You may have been charged more by your own insurers but that isn't the case across the board.

Thank you

I'm with Chris Knott and the very helpful chap I spoke to was happy I was making my car safer in winter

Also I know Insure The Box recommend using winters and have zero problems with steel wheels, if you want telematics-based insurance.

Just be aware this applies to TYRES ONLY.

Insurance firms will still try and charge you more if you change your wheels in the winter, even if you're 'downgrading' to steels.

Edit: I just read the other thread... http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/264065-direct-line-insurance-oe-winter-wheels-are-a-modification-and-will-cost-more/

Cheeky buggers! Especially since on the ABI list they dont appear to charge.

But I guess they have been vague with their criteria...

"None outside of general market exceptions relating to keeping the vehicle roadworthy etc."

My car is insured by RSA.

They are fine with fitting winter tyres, with or without different wheels, and no increase in premium.

When I enquired, they did ask me to let them know when I fitted the winter wheels though.

I contacted the ABI some time back and their reply stated the list covered both rims and tyres :wonder:

If your insurer is trying to charge for rims it might be worth contacting the ABI for clarification.

Edit found the e-mail reply;

Dear Mr. *********,

Thank you for your email which has been passed to me.

The commitment covers the fitting of manufacturer approved tyre and rim combinations as you point out in your email.

I will take your feedback into account with regard to the commitment being vague on this area.

Kind regards,

Well there you go - call me properly surprised. But, it looks like they haven't done anything to make the commitment clearer, as it still doesn't mention rims:

"The commitment of insurers:

The insurers named below do not require the payment of any additional premium if customers decide to fit winter tyres to their cars, provided that the tyres meet, and are fitted in accordance with, the relevant vehicle manufacturers’ specifications and are in a roadworthy condition whilst in use. " ABI website, today.

I've contacted the ABI and will post back when I get a reply, or if I get no reply (which would be worse). The webpage says that the commitment runs from Oct 2012 to October 2013 when they will review it. Your email was dated July, so why didn't they just make it clearer ready for October 2012?

Pressure from the insurance companies?
