Cambelt advice

Featured Replies

Evening folks. Need to get the cambelt done. It was last done in early 08 and i don't really want to risk it going. I've had a quote for a genuine new cambelt kit (£120), and a pattern kit from the local motor factor(£60). I don't really want to skimp, but it's nearly Christmas and like most people, i'm a bit skint. It's also gonna cost me £50 to have it fitted at a local garage. Any advice?

Regards

Toby

How many miles have you done since it was last fitted, early 08 to now isn't quiet 4 years yet, sure it will last till new year,

When i did mine i used genuine bits but did it myself so didn't have any labour costs altho 50quid for cambelt doing sounds really cheap

my last cambelt change was done in 2008 also, but is OEM kit ,with 180.000km interval

I've done 31.000 miles since then

Crikey only £50 to have it fitted that's crazy!! Most garages charge about £250 inc parts.

VW usually quote 60.000 miles or every 5 years for cambelt change. Skoda seem to have decided a shorter interval for exactly the same engines :wonder:

Motor factor kits are usually ok.

wow, that is cheap fitting. Get a new waterpump, I am sure my kit was around the £80 mark, so a bit more for a proper VAG kit ain't bad. I also replaced my water pump (again!), just to be on the safe side.

Make sure the stretch bolts are replaced too.

When I first changed the cambelt I changed the aux belt too, but I only changed that a few k before the cambelt so I did not bother this time.

Git a brand new belt tensioner and pulleys only fitted to engine never run all oem genuine $60 deli red

Specify a GATES aftermarket kit. Will be a little bit cheaper than OEM and still bloody good. I wouldn't go much cheaper than that myself. It's one thing you rely upon being decent. Is the £60 one a full kit, or just the belt?

Since it's only been three years, I wouldn't sweat about it too much just yet, unless you've really notched up the miles.
