Shiny bit under rear wheel arch.

Featured Replies

Whilst walking back to my Octy Estate today with my Jack Russell terriers something glinting caught my eye under the nearside rear wheel arch. I had a look and saw that the damper rod was exposed. I had a look under the other wheel arch and it looks like the rubber boot or whatever it's called has come loose. Is this just a stick it back together exercise or what? Any advice welcome, regards Monkster.

Requires a new bump stop for the damper i'd expect

My car is the same on both sides, I'm told it's a common failure. I phoned the local dealer and am told that the bumpstop cannot be purchased separately, so Shocks must be renewed! I also found that the car should pass MOT provided there is no leakage. I'm certainly not spending money for a while yet. Need to watch for the new MOT regulations though which might affect the advice I was given!

That could be an expensive bump stop them if you need to change the damper. Does anyone know if you can get oe dampers from anyone apart from skoda?

I priced ones from Skoda, not too bad though cannot quite remember. My local VAG specialist Breaker had good ones at £20 each earlier this year, but if the car passes the MOT I'm not replacing them!

Are you referring to the rubber/sponge bit that the plastic stone guard/tube attaches to at the top of the shock absorber arm?

I had both of them go on my Fabia, and they are available separately. From memory, the Octavia has a similar set up to my Fabia..? The part number's 6Q0512131B for a Mk I Fabia (pictures via Google image search) - probably won't be the same part number, but at least gives you something to look at/point your dealer at. They were around £10. It was a case of removing the shock absorber & re-mounting the rubber/sponge part and the stone guard before replacing it.

Don't know if that's any help ...

They are available separately and cost less that a tenner iirc.

Typical Dealer advice, "no Mr Gullible, the bumpstop isn't available separately but we will sell you two nice new Shocks" I should know better than to have believed this particular Garage.
