Canon EOS DSLR cameras... which one?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, out of a choice between the 7D or the full frame 5D MkII - which would you choose and why? Ive been wanting a full frame DSLR for a while but comparing the specs of the two I can afford, I notice that the 'lower spec' 7D actually holds a good few advantages. Burst rate is far higher on the 7D and it also utilises dual DIGIC 4 processors (as opposed to the single one on the 5D MkII).

I use the camera mainly for taking snaps of the family whilst away on holiday, including architecture and scenery also. I also shoot a fair amount of low light indoors stuff for various events. The 5D MkII looks a little long in the tooth now compared to the newer 7D so what one is best overall?!

I have the 24-70mm L series lens and a Speedlite external flash to use with either of the above.

Thanks in advance.

Money no object? 5dII every time. Much better low-light performance and better video.

Sports shooting may fit the 7d more, as it's got a better fps and 'longer' reach (being a crop sensor). But for overall image quality the 5d is still a nicer camera IMO.

That said, I'd not turn down a 7d - it's a great camera, and I intend to upgrade to one asap from my 50d (simply because I have a few heavily used EF-S lenses, so the upgrade to full frame would be far more expensive).

(also a plus for the 7d is it can remotely trigger the newer Speedlites, Which I think the 5d can't without the IR transmitter)

What Mort said.

7D will only come into its' own if you do a lot of wildlife and / or sports where the longer reach and faster fps will give it the advantage.

Architecture / portraits / landscape are definitely the domain of the 5D.

24-70L f2.8 and a 5DII are a marriage made in heaven.

I would much rather hold a larger camera, but this is a ver personal thing. - i shoot the nikon D3 series of cameras, and could not go back to a D700 as it just feels way to small. - so would go for the 5d Mk ii

Thanks very much gents. The 5D was where my gut was still leading me to tbh so you've backed up my feeling.

Are they similar money now?

Wait for the 5D MK III or pick up the MK II just after it's out?

Otherwise what about a second hand 1D body?

I can afford either a new 7d or a 'demo' 5D that's been on display for a week. Tonight, I secured the 5D mkII

Comgratulations, I think you will love it :)

I mainly shoot Sport and a bit of wildlife, so the 7D was a no brainer fo rme. Plus the more sophisticated AF (works a treat in AI mode) and better Video (hardly ever bother with this though :D ). But for what you shoot, the 5D seem the perfect choice. I often work where there are pro snappers using the 5DI/II for 'people' photos. Wish I could afford both

ps this thread is worthless without pictures (from it)
