Headliights are pants!

Featured Replies

hi folks,

The main beam lights on my girlfriends VRS are shockingly bad. The lights on my old '83 polo are better! I actually think the 'full beam' warning light on the dashboard is brighter...

Is this standard? The headlamp lenses look a tad clouded up with UV/age etc.

Are there direct fit better bulbs that are suggested? I tried Halfrauds - they list the standard items (99p a pair with my trade card), and then they list some snazzy "much brighter" ones but these come out at £15ea even with my trade discount but i'm not convinced they'd be much better without hearing some first hand reviews?

A friend keeps banging on about HID kits but i've never had any experience of these? are they any good? I've seen a few sets advertised in place for around £50 for a conversion kit. Seems like it may be the best bet?

It's a 2005 VRs if that makes any difference with the lights?

Thanks!

the cheaper hid kits are becoming a MOT failure in the new year i believe you have to buy different head light units.

after some better bulbs myself

Yes it's fairly normal.

Uprated bulbs are good. I went for Philips X-Treme +100% and the difference is night and day.

Xenons are even better though. A group buy is running on them at the moment :)

They H7 fitment?

Thanks for the replies!

I think Main beam is H3 is it not?

I just fitted some Osram Night Breaker + bulbs and highly rate them, a great improvement, £15 of eBay. I do around 80miles a day in the dark and don't even feel the need to use my full beam!

Polish the headlights with Menzerna Power finish and a DA, the lenses get swirled with washing.

How do you clean the inside of the headlights?

You can't. The inside should be ok anyway as they're sealed.

I've made up 2 relay driven looms for the headlights (like I have in my old Polo GT) and they run higher than std wattage bulbs - so much brighter - headlights have a blue tint & fullbeam are yellow tinted.

Stick some 80w bulbs in! Much better, not legal but mot and police will never know

where are people getting this from? Im an mot tester myself and was at vosa talking about the new year changes about a month ago and they never mentioned this?

its not in the MOT RFR list either?

also, you can clean your lense.. rub them down with some 2000grit wet and dry then polish with some t cut :D

Apparently the January manual states....

Method of inspection.

2. Where HID or LED dipped beam headlamps are

fitted, switch on the headlamps and check the

operation of any headlamp levelling and

cleaning devices fitted.

Reason for rejection of MOT certificate.

2. A headlamp levelling or cleaning device

inoperative or otherwise obviously defective.

There's been much discussion on internet forums about aftermarket HID's being an MOT fail, but if you read those instructions carefully it seems to suggest that if washers and levelling are fitted, then they should work. It does not go so far as to suggest that they *must* be fitted, which would appear to be a green light to aftermarket HID's at present.
