Car doesn't warm up?

Featured Replies

The owner first questioned why the heaters are not working then I realised the car wasn't at full temperature but the temperature has risen since it was started. It was about 1/4 way up the gauge.

Could this be a faulty thermostat?

Any help appreciated.

Yes, most likely the thermostat, although I’m assuming you have already checked the coolant level?

Although not completely relevant, but worth checking anyway is that on the 1.2 there should be some hoses that plug in from the plastic engine cover, sometimes these aren't plugged in if taken to independent garages etc for servicing. Also check the condition of the air filter, pollen filter and remove leaves from the grille/plenum chamber and brush the crap out of the radiator fins with a small brush to make sure everything is running optimally.

Also bear in mind that if you have the heating on in the car it will take longer for the engine to warm up to temperature as the heat will start to get dispersed through the cabin, especially when combined with near freezing temperatures outside, so if you are only doing short journeys it might not get a chance to get up to normal temperature.

thermostat or air blockage is my guess! or headgasket but cant imagin that!

check the simple stuff first..

take of the radiator cap and start it, rev it up to about 3k and hold it there for a bit, keep doing this until the fan kicks in.. then stick the cap back on.. that would be the fix for an air blockage.. worth trying as it wont cost nothing to fix!

hope this helps

Not sure if that is recommended as the cooling system has to be pressured.

Only when it gets over 100c. If the temperature is below that then it won't be pressurized. The reason it is under pressure is that it stops the water from boiling when over 100c.

im a main dealer technician so i think its safe to listen to me lol

yup, water expands when its hot. the area its in stays the same.. hence the pressure :)
