boost solenoid/ limp mode

Featured Replies

hi

ive done a search already and picked up a few peices of info on this, but wondered whetehr theres a definitive list of things to try, cheapest first :-)

just to set the scene, ive got a 53 octavia 1.9tdi 90bhp blueline. im a careful driver which probably hasnt helped matters as i beleive you should blast away the cobwebs every now and then, which i probably havent done.

it started a few months ago, just feeling 'flat' as tho the turbo wasnt working. intermittent, some days fine, some days not. in fact it seemed to be every other journey. sometimes even mid journey on constant revs itd just go flat all of a sudden, then maybe go ok again. now its flat all the time.

reading on here and on google, it seems a fair bet the vanes are clogged up, but im not mechnically minded at all. a mate has said it may be the 'boost solenoid' whatever that is.

so....is there a list of things to try? i read that a big dose of redex may help. that right? chuck a load in and try and thrash the engine maybe? then if that doesnt work, a new boost solenoid? where would i buy one of these solenoids from? main dealer or a branch of allwoods maybe? and if that doesnt work what would be my next move?

thanks for any info you can give me.

cheers

Hi and welcome.

No idea what a boost solenoid is either. :giggle:

Anyway, try this site in the USA.

There are sections there on Limp Mode and on just-down-on-power. You will have to register to get access to most of the site.

I am working on this problem myself. I have replaced a couple of seals and I think it might be fixed. I think you should check for boost leaks first before buying parts - cheapest.

thanks for that, makes interesting reading even tho i dont really understand it. one thing it did say was if im lucky, itll be the N75 valve. ive read that before somewhere and im thinking that may be the 'boost solenoid' i was talking about before.

have you heard of this term? and are they easy enough to buy seperately?

thanks a lot

You'd be better posting this on the Octavia mk1 forum really. The mk2 Octavia TDi has the solenoid/electrovalves combined in one single unit (a black box on the bulkhead with various thin rubber pipes leading to it) but your mk1 may well be completely different and the solenoid valves available individually.

Ah right, thanks. I didnt realise mine was mk1, I was thinking it'd be mk2 and the pre-vw octavias were mk1. I'll post it on the mk1 forum.

Arguably you are right, the 1960s model should be the mk1, yours a mk2 and the current ones mk3 :)
