Live power feed

Featured Replies

Hi,

I need to tap into the live power feed near the rear view mirror. Obviously it needs to be a permanent live with the ignition on.

This is for a Gentex self dimming rear view mirror. I don't want to route the wire all the way round the trim to the fuse box, so the power at the interior light makes sense.

The harness to the light has 3 wires (Brown, Blue & ?) I don't have a voltage meter here unfortunately.

Cheers

I put a Gentex mirror in my car -took less than 10 minutes to run the cable down to the fuse box: Straight up in to the headliner, across to the right and tuck the cable behind the rubber door seal that runs down the pillar and slip it down the back of the panel on the side of the dash and you're there.

Wouldn't wiring it in to the interior light mean that it's got power all the time, even with the ignition off, very low consumption, but a power drain none the less.

I miss my auto dipping rear view mirror.

Where did you obtain your Gentex mirror ?

Is it easy to fit ?

Any advice and information would be appreciated.

I think the above poster would be more helpful, but I have the mirror fitted at the moment (minus the power)

It fits between the visors really neatly. It looks very OE.

I'm getting the mirror glass replaced as well with tinted coated glass. Where I live there is a lot of 5am traffic that constantly blinds you. Halfords custom cut any size with 'anti-dazzle' glass pretty reasonably.

My Dad had his mirrors done by them and they are superb.

This was leading into a request for some advice on removing the mirror glass

Have a look at this other thread: my contributions start on page 2. If there's anything you want to ask about, give me a shout

Here's the eBay link - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230343226775?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_4658wt_961

Comes with the VW adaptor and fits really quickly. Don't forget to slacken the torx screw before fitting, slide it on then re-tighten it afterwards.

When I look at my interior mirror it seems to be attached to a bracket by means of a ball and socket, this bracket being stuck to the windscreen.

Do you pull the mirror of this socket and attach the Gentex (by means of an adaptor) to the bracket.

Does your Gentex have a model no.?

The OE mirror can be removed by twisting it anti-clockwise. The mirror itself will probably break away from the mount, but then it's just a case of getting a firm grip of the bracket and turning it again anti-clockwise and it pops off the windscreen button.

The adaptor that is supplied with the Gentex mirror is simply slid into the new mirror

bracket, the torx screw slackened off a few turns, slot the mirror onto the windscreen button, then tighten the screw once it's in the desired place.

As far as the model No is concerned, there's a link above already.

All that you can see gets removed -as in the post above -there is a metal mounting underneath that is bonded on to the windscreen glass -the Gentex mirror fits on to that with the aid of the adapter. All of the branded Gentex mirrors available retail (they make OEM stuff as well) use the same fitting as far as I know. The adapter does not appear to be made by Mito/Gentex and is available from these people, they also sell on eBay under the seller name of gps-ppc. I bought a GENK2 model bundled with the adapter from their eBay listing here This is the most basic model and only has the dimming feature, however there are other more expensive models with compass and temperature sensor displays as well as colour monitors for sat-nav and reversing cameras and homelink systems which as far as I know would all work with the adapter.

Thanks to all who replied.

This gives me confidence and I wiil be getting a Gentex in the near future.
