Rear Swinging Axle

Featured Replies

I have just replace all my front end bushes for Superpro type using the guides on here which were very useful.

However in my bush kit is the bushes for the rear swinging axle.

Could anyone tell me if there is a guide on here for that as I cat seem to find one in the Tech section.

Cheers

Anyone able to help please.

Can't find one either. Plus the link to Skoda Workshop manuals is broken.

To do the job properly......

New bolts x2 and nuts x2 for the rear axle pivot bush

New bolts x2 and nuts x2 for the lower damper the axle join

New brake line joint metal clips x4

The rear brake flex hoses x2 are held captive on the join to the rigid sections on both the axle and the bodywork. So you have to easly remove both the metal clips then CAREFULLY cut a wide slot (just wide enough for the solid brake pipe to pass through) on the front edge of the metal braket holding the brake pipe join on the axle only! This will allow you to the unclip the rigid brake pipe from the plascit connectors on the axle and "free" the whole pipe from the caliper to the car body from the axle. Now you can undo the pivot bolts on the axle and remove and lower the frontmost part of the axle down so that the bush is now accessable (or you can also remove the rear caliper and then undo the lower join of the damper to the axle and fully remove the whole axle including the springs!

Now the hard part.......using several new hacksaw blades inserted through the gaps in the bush cut the web flanges that hold the inner part to the oter plastic sleeve. Also cut (carefully) through the outter plastic sleeve. You may also need to insert a flat blade screwdriver between the plastic sleve and the metal housing etc and hammer etc it out...brute force..just be carefull not to damage the metal tube that holds the bush!! Then sand any rough bits down on the inside of the metal holder and copper grease well Now insert the new Superpro bush (easy as a two piece) you might need to use a clamp to get the metal tube in and compress the whole lot to sit "in" the correct place, then copper grease the contact points between the bush and the flanges on the car body. (infact any contact point between the bush and the holder or the body flanges etc!)

Then torque up the bolts as per my list here........

REAR SUSPENSION:

Main pivot bush through bolt & nut = 45Nm (33lbf ft)+ 1/4 turn. Always renew nut. These should be done up so that they just touch the mounting bracket, then refit wheels etc. and lower car to ground. Open hatch and bounce car up and down from centre of hatch lower lip (this settles the bushes). Now you can fully tighten the bolts up (leave the car on ground!!)

Piston strut to beam bottom mounting bolt & nut = 40Nm (30lbf ft)+ 1/4 turn. Always renew nut. These should be done up so that they just touch the mounting bracket, then refit wheels etc. and lower car to ground. Open hatch and bounce car up and down from centre of hatch lower lip (this settles the bushes in piston mounting). Now you can fully tighten the bolts up (leave the car on ground!!)

P.S. bofore you remove the OEM bush carefully mark (take picture) which face the flange is on and where the thickest part of the flange is (as it is cut at an angle) in relation to the rest of the axle...if the Superpro has a bigger flange and is sloped etc this must line up with the OEM!.....unless they state different......
