Electric Windows Problem

Featured Replies

For the last couple of mornings when starting the car my passanger window automatically goes down and will only go back up from the drivers side. When it has reached the top it goes up and down about 1/8" about a dozen times.

When it has settled to normal it is only the drivers switch that works. Does anyone know the cure?

Sounds like the window needs to be reset so it knows it open and closed operating parameters. Firstly, with the ignition on and engine running (not essential to have engine running, but for some reason it seems to work best with the motor running), using the passenger side button (which should work with the motor running) fully open the window and keep your finger on the button when it is fully open for a full 3 seconds or until you hear it clicking. Release the button. Now close the window fully and again keep your finger on the button for a full 3 seconds or until the window starts clicking. Release the button. Now the window knows it's parameters again and will function normally. If it happens again, it probably means the window runners and rubber surrounds need lubricating with a silicone rubber lubricant. The window becomes stiff over time especially if it's not used often and this causes the window electronics to lose control of it's operating parameters. The windows safety mechanism can often think there is an obstruction in the window and stops the closing or opening operation. But when this happens all the time due to stiff window runners it messes up the window settings.

Thanks for the reply I will try it when I get home from work.

Sounds to me like the passenger side switch is knackered.

Perhaps try disconnecting it?

I tried as you suggested and the windows went up and down a couple of times then the switched stopped working on the passengers side but would still operate from the drivers side. While the windows were operating there was a squeal so I presume it needs lubricating. How does the trim come off the door without breaking anything?

I preume this is the lubricant.

Before taking the trim off try spraying the visible/accessible part of the window runners and use the window a few times to move the lubricant around.

My concern is the driver's switch is working but the passenger switch is not and while your problem could be sticky runners it could also be a faulty passenger window switch.

Edit the Halfords stuff should be OK.

Had the same issue just a few minutes ago. Except it wasn't the passenger's window but the driver's. When I pulled the switch up to the end so that it "clicked", the window went fully up and then immediately down. Found this thread before posting and tried what Estate Man suggested.

In the beginning I thought It didn't work as I didn't hear any noise after keeping the swtich pressed for more than 3 seconds and in addition, the button seemed to have lost the "click" feature. It was only being pressed at one "level" and that was it. I then repeated the "keep it for more than 3 seconds" procedure and the "click" ability (automatic closure/opening) was again activated, plus the windows was again able to fully close/open and stay there. So, problem solved!

this happened to me at the start of the year, got in the car one night when it was about -5 outside, and opened the window briefly, and when i pressed the switch to put it back up again, it went up, then came 3-4 of the way back down, and kept doing it. the only way i could get the window up was if i edged it up, bit by bit, and even then there was still a tiny gap at the top. i eventually got it to stay where it was, then a few weeks later it happened again. took a while to get it to stay up again, but been fine since :whew:

my left windows does the same, when i close it, it goes up then down to about 3/4 way down, my right window has happened once.

i took my car down to the dealers and they changed the motor but hasn't cured it. oh well, just have to live with it.

jim pm me or emty your box pete

there seems to be a common problem with the fabia and roomster passenger side electric window

mine was the drivers side window that was messing around

The drivers side rear window on my Roomster had some strange behaviour when new, not going up or down correctly. I reset it by using the door locking remote, window open and close function (engine off) then reseting the window as described above.

I too have started a thread about my fabia windows

Since the cold weather has gone so has the problem. I don't know if it has anything to do with the damp.

Going back to this old thread my windows have been fine all summer but one damp morning my windows started going up and down of its on accord. The retired car mechanic over the road had a problem with a Superb taxi last week and said it was the damp getting into the motor.
