Speaker upgrades? Recommendations?

Featured Replies

Merry crimbo peeps,

In bad need of upgrading my speakers as they are crackling like mad (does anyone know why this is??)

So does anyone know a decent set of speakers I could get? What size do I need and depth? Links would be great :)

Also is there anything else I could do to make my sound better?

Cheers Jay

I've just been through researching this.

Youll need 165 (6.5") components up front. Speaker depth of no greater than 65mm.

I had a budget of £100, and found Alpine Type Gs to be best bang for buck when planning to amp externally.

If you want to stick to headunit power then go for hertz deicis

This here says its 68mm in depth. Also what do you mean amp powered and head unit power? Amp power meaning like powered by an amplifier like a sub?

yes, to get the best out of your speakers (if there decent) they'l need to be powered by an amp, if your just going for some cheapish low power speakers they will be fine off the head unit,

I have some focal k2ps and a genesis profile 2 from my previous car, hopefully theyl be good to go in the vrs

Oh yeh, mounting depth is 61mm, not sure where the extra 7mm goes, worth enquiring about.

I mean an amplifier as in an amplifier. Yes, like a sub requires. I assume by your answer you weren't considering one, so maybe just go with the deicis. Find out about the true depth of the speakers though.

It's possible the extra 7mm is the bit from the surface it screws to and includes the excursion of the speaker.

No I wasn't but as I said suggestions to make the sound better would be great :) so where do you put your amp?

Where ever you can fit it. Under front seats, in the boot.

I'd recommend a bit of prior research, I'm sure YouTube offers good guides for basic amp setups.

so where do you put your amp?

Depends on the size. Most people put them in the boot, and screw to the rear seat. Some other locations include near the glovebox or under the seat.

So you have to run a wire all the way to the amp in the boot and then back to the speakers in the front?

You have to run 5 wires the length of the car.

Power, remote, speaker + & - left, speaker + & - right, and audio out.

Not to mention ground for the amp.

As I said, do some research. People could mention terms and techniques that'll go over your head all day long on here, or people with more time on their hands that'll go to the trouble of trying to explain how everything works.

Fact is there's so much online resource nowadays, it'll have been explained better elsewhere, and usually with visual reference.

That's why I recommended YouTube as I'm sure itll have an abundance of tutorials for basic amp wiring. This will give you a better understanding of what is involved instead of someone explaining the whole process on here.

Here will be a good place to ask about grommet location to the engine bay (when you get that far), along with preferred amp location.

Have a look into it and see if it's a route you want to take. If you want better audio its certainly the best route, but to what degree of 'better' will determine whether it's necessary for you. Once you started its also hard on draw the line on car audio!

No, I assume if you are adding an Amp you will have replaced the std HU with something with USB control and hence if you had a CD changer this is now redundant right? The Amp can be easily fitted under the front seat shortening the runs considerably.

For the cables you have an RCA stereo pair from HU to amp, a remote swtich on (blue) from HU to amp, a main power feed which is connected directly to the battery and fused in the engine bay and connected to the amp +, a ground from amp to the car chassis (as short as possible and seat mount bolts are good for this). Then it's just speaker left and right. All pretty straight forward.

As for speakers you can fit deeper speakers but not much and you have to make your own spacer rings from MDF so it's easier to use the pre bought spacers from Autoleads, just make sure that you get the correct size as the golf ones are needed and not fabia ones as described in the catalogue.

Carl.
