Which code reader

Featured Replies

I know this has probably been covered a qouple of times but I have 3 in mind:

1) Cheap ebay OBD

2) more expensive ebay one

3) Ross tech - lite

I'm a bit confused on which to buy. I certainly cannot affor the VCDS ross tech at 249GBP.

All I want is to be able to check codes and maybe turn some service signals off.

Have you any experience of any of these three and which is best?

and p.s. I have skoda octavia vrs 2002 :)

Thanks in advance ;)

Tom

Hi,

Have looked at your three options, the first two are for vcds 409 which is a now out of date program and way over priced in both options.

Vcds lite is a free download from Ross Tech, a cable can be obtained from Gendan for £20 including postage, Gendan are agents for Ross Tech and the cable is of good quality.

Even with the unregistered version you will be able to check and clear fauls on all modules and much more.Far more usefull than any of the other code readers available.

I've just purchased the Ross-Tech cable from Gendan. came to £19 posted. Thought it would be much more useful to have this and the software (Lite) than a generic code reader :)

Ive downloaded the ross tech free software, going to try and see if my ebay cable works with it or not,

I could do with a code reader but want a generic one that will work on alsorts rather than just vag cars

you may need to configure the cheap ones. Look at topics I hav started > Auto open/close windows and it tells you how to set up the cable on there.

bear in mind that any "generic" EOBD reader, although applicable to a wide range of cars, will only read engine system codes, and only EOBD generic ones at that, which will be dependent on what the individual engine system puts out under EOBD. You will probably be able to read and clear codes that put the engine MIL light on, but no guarantees beyond that.
