Warming time

Featured Replies

Hello Everyone

This is my first winter with this car(2011 octavia II 2.0 TDI CR FL), How much time should I keep my car on Idle for engine warm up.

Regards

Idling to warm up an engine is not to be recommended - you should just get in, start it up and drive off.

It won't warm up idling. You'll do more harm than good. Just start up and drive off, gently for the first few miles.

Against the law would you believe :o as others say, spare your neighbours and the ozone layer and drive off straight away!

Which is all very well, but if you have a misted up windscreen you need to warm the car up to demist it!

So why don't Skoda do an electric windscreen? They do on a Yeti!

So until some dumbass son of a bitch in a council can come up with a solution they can FOXTROT OSCAR!

Yip it sure is hehe. Specifically on a public road but never the less I have the exact same car 2011 TDI CR and driving it to get oil temp up to 90Deg C+ it takes me more than a few miles of gentle driving min 8 max 12 ish. Coolant temp seems to get up to its happy middle of gauge within half the time of the oil for mine.

ref the running of unattended car for anyone who is into that sort of thing :

"123

The Driver and the Environment. You MUST NOT leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road. Generally, if the vehicle is stationary and is likely to remain so for more than a couple of minutes, you should apply the parking brake and switch off the engine to reduce emissions and noise pollution. However it is permissible to leave the engine running if the vehicle is stationary in traffic or for diagnosing faults.

[Law CUR regs 98 & 107]"

That's the one thing I miss from my Focus, the heated windscreen.

If you want to demist the windscreen then leave an old bedsheet on it overnight. You shouldn't leave a car idling to warm up as it won't do very quickly and certainly won't do in a diesel car in very cold weather. The best thing to do is to start up, allow no more than say 30 seconds of idling before driving away, accelerating gently and not using full revs until the car is fully warmed up.

Highway code... Written by idiots who live in large houses with garages.

@Countryboy tried that & a frost sheet & it still doesn't work.

As I've said before council workers (we use the term workers very loosely) are a waste of time & money.

Can't say I've had an issue with demisting the screen. Click the button to screen and it does the job fine.

But then what would I know I'm just one of them lazy council workers!

I'm sure a service to demist your screen could be looked at, we also provide a bottom wiping service and let me carry out the rubbish serv :pice.

Quote from the Octavia owner's manual:

For the sake of the environment

Never warm up the engine when the vehicle is standing. Drive off right away.

Through this the engine reaches its operating temperature more rapidly and the

pollutant emissions are lower

"You MUST NOT leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road."

The use of the word 'unnecessarily' allows for some room to interpret the highway code in different ways.

If you can't see through the front screen because it is misted up, then that must be necessary to clear the windscreen.

Yes, a wipe with a cloth could do he job, but it mists back up again very quickly most damp or cold mornings.

Also note that it only stipulates this as being applicable "on public roads". If your car is parked off the road (e.g. private driveway), then you are 'exempt' from this 'law' anyway.

I'm just stating it as it is.

What the flock has it got to do with the council?

Yes, heated screens are great. Turn the fan on full blast on your windscreen, and man up. FFS.

Pour a large amount of only just lukewarm water over the screen. Then it doesn't mist, and you can start the car, and drive straight off. Better for the car and the environment.

Place a hot water bottle on top of the dash, and go and have a cup of tea. Simple

That is true, the car is still cold when I get into it in the morning, usually at 5.30am when I go to work, it does however stop a frost forming on the windows and makes it quicker to clear if it gets a bit misty.

Also, if you leave your car on the drive ticking over to warm up while you have your cornflakes(other cereals are available! :giggle: ) and some scroat comes along and nicks it, your insurance is going to respond to your claim with 2 words the first starting with F and the last being off!

Air con cleans a misted screen like magic. The demisting air needs to be dry rather than warm.

Doesn't work when the inside has iced up though does it. I have found this year though that the tsi warms up much faster than the diesel did. It melts the ice pretty quickly

We had a few instances of that round here the other week, enough for the police to be issuing reminders on local radio.

Problem is, if it's cold, the aircon compressor doesn't work.

True.

Could have had me a nice new Jag XKR not long ago as the driver had left his car running outside his driveway and gone back indoors for something!

Don't think he was into cornflakes at 11am though!

Or warming his car up to de-mist the screen.
