Overtaking a lorry...

Featured Replies

Fuse lit or not, if a professional Trucker can not determine the lenth of his 44 ton truck he should not be driving it.

THE END

Have you driven a 44T truck lately?

Sometimes its not that simple! It's more to do with safe distances, weather conditions, speed etc, it's more a polite yes there's enough room for you to pull in. I've had trucks and cars whip in front of me with only a few feet between us and there's no way I'd be stopping 44 tonnes in that much space!

If its raining hard you can't always see/judge that there's a safe enough distance between you to pull in hence a quick friendly flash to let you know.

Until you've driven a truck you'll not fully understand I suppose!

Ah! common sense

OH Dear the fuse has been lit :

Judging the length of an articulated lorry is quite difficult and most lorry drivers, without any help from their lorry driving collegues, would err on the safe side and leave a quite large gap before pulling over. However this does mean that the overtaking lorry could be holding back some traffic trying to overtake .In an effort to minimise the inconvenience to other road users, most lorry drivers try to move over as quickly as possible and have evolved a headlight flashing code between themselves ( & other motorists ?) to facilitate this. AS soon as the overtaking lorry passes the inside lorry , the inside lorry will flash his/her headlights to signal the overtaking lorry that it is safe to pull over. Now what could be wrong in this ? The problem is that most lorry drivers ( & motorists) think that this is a good simple idea but sometimes do not appreciate that some other drivers do not understand this "complicated" code.

Of course there are good and bad drivers of all kinds of vehicles but in my experience most truck drivers are much better drivers than those drivers driving cars.
