Overtaking a lorry...

Featured Replies

Overtaking a lorry doing 50mph on a fairly straight road. no cars coming other way, indicate out, car really hooks up well and I safely fly past. No cars coming the other way and I leave room behind me. As I indicate back in he gives me a quick flash of the lights.

Is he saying I'm a fool? :(

There was a stationary speed camera down the road but its switched off.

Any truckers give me an insight?

I would guess he was trying to warn you about the camera ,as a local you know its turned off but i bet his satnav was telling him the camera was active .

Im no trucker but i would imagine he was warning you re the speed camera ahead, or if he was a 'big truck little willy' (small man syndrome) type of guy then my opinion would differ ha. Depends on the type of driver he was i guess.

Or maybe he was a Briskoda member just saying hello?

Some of them flash to let you know your safely past and to pull back in again. Ok this mainly happens on motorways when one lorry overtakes another lorry.

Could of been bored!

Could of been anything, not worth worrying about :)

It's best to interpret all signals given by other motorists as meaning "I am Here" Then there can be no misunderstanding.

This is the normal trucker courtesy signal of saying "its safe to pull back in". Usually more appropriate when they are being passed by another truck where the driver of passing truck may have difficulty judging when he is fully passed the one he is overtaking.

I'm pretty certain that the trucker was flashing you because he was angry, he was trying to pull you over and murder you, but you escaped you see.

This quite possible but it doesn't only apply to Truckers. Old people driving Peugeots or Volvo's get particularly agitated when you blast past them and flash at me. Even had some leave full beam on. They may want to do 30 in a 50 but I don't.

Yeah it's normally people who have a rover 200 with one of them old aa badges stuck on, I had some some old git in a maestro wave his fist at me the other day for blatting it past him on the a31, I always wave my fist back too.

Only if your a woking girl/boy...

I'm not old! B) I also wouldn't flash if you passed me, just floor it so you couldn't pass ;) ROLF.

To the OP. This is the exact reason, IMO light flashing shouldn’t be used for letting people in, angrily gesturing or anything other than to let you know they are there. Although I would think you’d know he was there.

I'd be pretty confident in saying that it was a "you're safe to pull back over" flash. Not really needed when you are in a car but I think some truckers just get in the habit of doing it when they see the overtaking vehicle indicate to pull back over.

He's letting you know your past and can pull back in.

these are correct, its normal trucker response to an overtake, they always do it for large vehicals (I always get flashed adfter an overtake in the ambulance) because its hard to tell when you are clear! but they are sometimes on autopilot, and flash cars that overtake, even though you will know when you are clear ;)

If a professional truck driver has difficulty judging when he is fully passed another truck when overtaking he Shouldn't be driving.

I'm a trucker and would say he/she flashed out of courtesy to say your passed and ok to pull in

Agree with Si-340t

+1 . Standard practice for all decent truck drivers . They're not all bad !

It propably also because you actually pulled in ahead of his safe breaking distance and didn't do the usuall car driver idiot pull in 5 feet infront of the truck special.

If your going to overtake something make sure your not about to jump straight into someones breaking zone. I've seen it done to trucks, cars towing and also just cars. I've seen someidiots do it when they must have had 2 feet on each end of thier car at most, some people don't realise that puting your car in someone elses breaking zone is dangerous. I tend to get flashed alot on motorways because I don't pull in right in front of trucks. Also if anyones never been in a truck its quite supprising how much dead road space there is between the front of a truck and your line of sight.

OH Dear the fuse has been lit :o

Fuse lit or not, if a professional Trucker can not determine the lenth of his 44 ton truck he should not be driving it.

Why do you need rear parking sensors on your Octy ?

Sometimes its not that simple! It's more to do with safe distances, weather conditions, speed etc, it's more a polite yes there's enough room for you to pull in. I've had trucks and cars whip in front of me with only a few feet between us and there's no way I'd be stopping 44 tonnes in that much space!

If its raining hard you can't always see/judge that there's a safe enough distance between you to pull in hence a quick friendly flash to let you know.

Until you've driven a truck you'll not fully understand I suppose!
