Rear windscreen dilema

Featured Replies

Hello to all my fellow Fabia drivers.

I have a query about my 2001 Fabia Elegance. I bought the car 3 months ago, with very low milege (20,000) and only 1 previous owner. The car has been good so far with no significant problems whatsoever. I had it serviced 2 weeks ago and everything was in order, the MOT has almost 8 months left on it.

I recently drove to France and noticed after a few days that whenever I drove over a slight bump, or when I closed the boot, there was a rattle, like the sound of something hitting the rear windscreen. After inspcecting the boot, I discovered that the top left corner of the glass is no longer glued down, and when tapped, there is clearly a small gap between the glass and the seal, it looks like the glue has come unstuck at the top left corner or the glass.

We took the car to the local motor vehicle shop where the helpful attendant told me that there isn't much we can do except to replace the rear windscreen, or maybe try to re-glue the section which has come loose.

Does anyone have any experience in this? and does anyone know how much a new rear windscreen would cost?

Thanks for reading

Personally I'd use some clear silicon to deal with the gap and the rattle and not worry about it unless it comes unstuck further.

Get some black windscreen sealant from halfords and use that to fill the gap/seal/glue.......use a cotton bud dipped in meths to get into the gap and clean the area before you use the sealent!!!!.... B)

Take it to a small windscreen replacement place, they'll cut the glass completely out and rebond it. Bodyshops have that done all the time when the replace tailgates.

Mine occasionally open slightly. This might be due to the position of the handles and constant joggling on poor quality Gloucestershire roads - or might be because it's all too easy to knock the handles when getting out of or taking things out of the back seat. However I've just checked them not having done so for several weeks and mine are both fine at present.
