Hi and happy new year to you and your wife.

Not tried TWO iPhones before...

As each iPhone has a different serial number, you need to connect them to a computer running the latest version of iTunes and go through the registration process each in turn, remembering to create your own 'Apple ID'.

More help can be accessed here........................

If you need further help I'm happy to chat to you if you want to give me your phone number via a PM. :)

Just run the two phones off the same account, name them different names and ITunes will recognise them as separate devices.

Do it this way, then you can share app store and itunes purchases, if you do separate accounts and you have an app /song you both want then you would need to buy it twice (once on each account).

iOS 5 devices no longer need a physical connection for registration.
Activation can be done over a Wi-Fi network or over your carrier’s cellular network (not available in all areas). If neither are available, you need to connect iPhone to your computer.

The Apple website has lots of support, including manuals and tutorials. You can also download free copies of these from the iBook store (and read them on your iPhone). If you have not taken out an AppleCare agreement you get 90 days of free tech support from Apple so just call them up and ask them for advice.

No you don't, you use iCloud to sync everything. http://www.apple.com/icloud/what-is.html

With iOS5 and Lion Apple are moving to cloud based and wireless sync. You now have a choice, you can still use the wired connection to iTunes or the wireless connection to iCloud for moving things around.

This is a step change in the way Apple expect you to do things and integrates with some of the hardware design decisions such as not putting blu-ray drives in devices and creating devices such as the MacBook Air with no disc based storage built in.

iCloud will Sync Photo's but only from the past 30 days.

If i was you, get a Google Account and set this up on your phone - we use one for business, and i can access my Diary wherever i am, on iPad, iPhone, MacBook, the Wife's iPhone, or even cross-platfors like to BB and Android device, along with a web site. - It will also store your contacts, and will update if you update.

I have the one apple id for all of our devices; if i download an MP3 from iTunes on my iPhone, it will automatically add it to the other devices. - Same with App's.

I need to sync my contacts, notes and calendar from iPhone to laptop, currently using Outlook and wired connection. Frustrated that I can't sync wirelessly (not even by Bluetooth). Need to sync every day. I'd be grateful for a suggested solution. The cloud won't hold my calendar and I also need to be able to see it on the laptop when home. The laptop is not Apple. (the phone is iPhone 4 running iOS 5).

Thanks in anticipation.

See my post above Stuart - use Google Docs. - Works well!

Al, thanks.

Do you use the Calendar app on iPhone and sync to google calendar?

Also (bear with my ignorance) but is there any way to see your calendar when there's no Internet access?

Yes, Using the iPhone calendar will update google cal - you don't need to be online to view the calendar entries - you can put in an entry when no data, and it will update onto the web when you have a data connection.

in my case, updating my iPhone calendar, updates iCal on my MacBook and iMac. - it will also work with Outlook too.

it works SO easy once set up. :)

iCloud can only sync what's on the iPhone, and you need yo sync with iTunes to get it there first

iCloud will Sync Photo's but only from the past 30 days.
iCloud will sync the last 1,000 photos using photo stream for 30 days and you then decide if you want to move them to your camera roll on your idevice or your picture library on your mac or PC to keep them for more than the 30 days they live in the photo stream album.

iCloud syncs iCal calendars and your contacts between idevices and Mac or PC. For PC users there is an iCloud control panel that you need to install and it syncs mail, contacts, tasks, and calendars with Outlook.

Yes you can use the Google solutions as well as they use the same open standards (things like CalDav for the calendar).

iCloud can sync from any linked sync source. You modify or generate content on a PC or Mac it will sync to an idevice. Do the same on the idevice and it will sync back to the PC or Mac

The point I was clarifying is that all syncing and set up can now be done with a wireless connection (prior to iOS5 you had to connect a cable).

iCoud services are effectively at version 1.0 and are by no means perfect but they should be able to achieve what Stuart requires.

hertsnminds, that is a great tip. Thank you. I am going to attempt to do what you describe (as I have failed to get the iPhone to sync with Google after setting it all up through Microsoft Exchange).

Stuart

I'm struggling to do the latest update version 5 I think but it takes about half an hour and says server timed out? I'm stumped.

I don't want to use PhotoStream because of data protection, I photograph people's ID & stuff using the iPhone 4, but don't want it on the phone after downloading to my MacBook Pro. So I have turned off PhotoStream on the iPhone and also in Aperture, but wireless syncing does not download the photos. The only way I can do it is by a wired connection. Is this right?

It sounds like you might be over complicating things. Google mail and calendars can sync with an iPhone without an Exchange Server.

Remember you also have 90 days free Apple tech support when you buy an iPhone, so it might be worth giving them a ring to help you set things up.

you don't need a PC to get content onto an iPhone either

It really depends how you want to use things.

Maybe have a read of these Apple support pages

You could transfer wirelessly using photo stream then delete the stream...

Individual photos cannot be deleted from your Photo Stream. You can, however, delete all the photos in your Photo Stream by clicking the Reset Photo Stream button in your account at icloud.com. The Reset Photo Stream button will instantly delete all Photo Stream photos stored in iCloud, but it will not remove any Photo Stream photos that have already been pushed to your devices.

You can however just choose to sync, as you have said, with a wired connection straight into an app like iPhoto on the Mac.
