hydraulic clutch on 1.9 TDI estate

Featured Replies

Hi everyone.

I am hoping to learn about what is happening to my car. I have read several posts describing a clutch problem on these pages, but none seems exactly like mine.

I own a 2006 1.9 TDI estate Octavia Elegance and I am experiencing a problem with a hydraulic clutch. After a longer journeys on the motorway (in 5th gear all the time) the clutch pedal becomes quite soft, with empty pedal stroke, so the clutch seems to engage only at the very end, when pedal is all the way in. Pumping the pedal several times put things right, but only temporarily. For short journeys around town, you would not even notice there is a problem (All normal). Additionally the brake fluid is disappearing, which probably means that there is a leak in the system, hence the air must have come in.

It happened after a couple of hours on the highway. Checking the oil the level was very low (no indicator light on?!?). Service was done where the whole system was checked (the mechanic could not find the leak) oil was replaced and the system properly bleed. The following 1000 km (also on the highway) everything was great but then the pedal went soft again.

As I found on this and other Skoda forums, this is not a clutch but rather a hydraulic issue. Some describe failure of hydraulic pistons/cylinders (one is at the top by the pedal and the master by the gearbox).

I would be grateful if some of you might share his similar experience and what could be causing it. I am rather getting my head around it in order not get stripped naked (again) by the garage.

Thank you for your help!

Hi,

The clutch hydraulics take there fluid from the brake master cyinder resovoir, the fluid take off point is about two thirds of the way up, I would suggest that you have a good look round all the brakes for any sign of a leak, also clutch slave cylinder, Once repaired the system needs pressure bleeding,

Tony

I have the exact same problem and have dropped my car off at the Claybank Skoda Dealership today, they have said they will road test the vehicle to ascertain what the fault is. They want to replicate the fault as I complained about this for the first time some time in March, before my warranty ran out and was told my clutch was just a little heavier than normal. I was also told that this was normal as this could vary from car to car. At the time they were unable to replicate. Last night I returned from London after travelling quite fast in 5th gear only to stop at the end of a sliproad to find the clutch had become featherlite and I was unable to engage any of the gears. I pumped the clutch peddle 3-4 time till it felt firm again and it operated enough to allow gear changes. Service chap drove it this afternoon and could not replicate fault. He told me it was out of warranty and would be a chargable job. I explained I complained whilst it was under warranty and unfortunately they were unable to replicate the fault. This does not mean the fault did not exist. If replicated I have authorised them 1 hours labour to investigate I hope that this will be considered as a warranty job as the car is a 3 year old octy 2 fl with just over 31000 on the clock. Anybody have any ideas what the dealer is likely to come back with?

Bleeding the Clutch and Brakes resolved the clutch problem all sorted!!

Hi guys!

Just to report, it was a slave cylinder causing the problems. Now replaced and it works ace ever since! Pretty easy fix as well as on Octy MK2 this does not require removing the gearbox.

Thanks for all your help!

T.

I would push for warranty claim if you took it in before. They should have a record of your first visit.

if it's anything like what I've experienced there they just won't be interested.

Not good Mike. Our local is Basingstoke and they have always been pretty helpful, but I only use them for the odd part (mats so far) but have called asking for prices, the latest being a stereo surround I didn't need :)
