XL Tyres on VRS

Featured Replies

Are XL (Extra Load) tyres really needed on the front of a VRS, this is in the standard 205/45x16 size? Just got a set from Camskill and they aren't XL rated but the current fronts are (crap as they are). Will it make much of a difference as I have only seen the size listed and not specifically needing XL?

Carl.

They'll be fine

I have some Winters from Camskill (Same size)

You don't need XL tyres. It's a small car.

They are usually just used on heavy cars.

With reference XL tyres beware!!!! I believe Skoda supply XL tyrtes as original equipment on the VRS. I have heard of a vehicle being involved in a accident and when insurance assessor looked at the car the claim was thrown out as the tyres were not as specified in original equipment. Insurance companies may differ but it seems in most instances they will look at anyway to avoid paying up. Itb would be well worth checking.

One thing I probably should add, is that tyres need to be the correct load rating.

If you compare the Michelin PS3 the XL version has a load rating of 545kg/load code 87, while the non XL has a load rating of 487kg/load code 83.

It should say in the vehicle handbook what load rating is needed on the tyres.

That's what I thought as well. I've got 235/45 ZR18's on my Mitsi Grandis and they are XL's and would expect them to be too as it's big and a 7 seater.

On the rating code I did a quick search and original fitments as 83W's and that's what I've got in the garage now.

The factory supplied spare on mine is a Continental with an 83 load rating. It is not an extra load rated tyre.
