ASR \ ABS Issue

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Long time reader, first time poster.

Hoping you can offer me some advice. Must apologise in advance for not being overly car\mechanically versed.

Own a 2001 Skoda Superb. Had the passenger side CV joint replaced recently. Following the replacement, whenever the car is turned to the right the ASR \ ABS system kicks in. The ASR warning light appears and I can feel the car applying the brakes.

If I turn off the ASR by pressing the button on the dash, no problem.

Decided to leave it a couple of weeks to see if the problem would rectify itself. Was going along the motorway when it kicked in slightly with the usual ASR flashing light appearing and I could feel the brakes being applied slightly. I immediately disabled the ASR and everything went back to normal. Then the ASR and ABS warning lights came onto the dash constantly - but no brake action. My guess is the ABS\ASR system had been switched off due to the issue (and the lights were warning me of this).

Got the car to a local garage who looked it over and said they couldn't spot any issues with the ABS\ASR sensor on the passenger side (suspected replacement CV joint could have caused it).

Problem kept occurring on\off for another week so had the passenger side ASR\ABS sensor replaced assuming that to be the problem.

The problem still lingers (with the ASR kicks in when turning to the right, ASR lights come on and brakes being pumped by the ABS) but now a new related problem has sprung up. When braking (not hard just normal braking) I can feel the ABS activating and pumping the brakes - but no warning light comes in telling me it's doing this.

Anybody got any ideas?

I've resigned myself to the fact I will have to take it to the garage and get it diagnosed with VAG-COM but hoping for some forward ideas of what it could be.

Thanks in advance

Paul

It does sound like knackered abs sensor, very easy to do during cv joint removal. Was it the same garage (that replaced the joint) replacing the sensor? Make sure you actually have a new sensor there, not the old one.

But if it is not the sensor, it could be faulty or incorrectly put together joint "catching" in turns and effectively locking the wheel momentarily and causing a skid and ABS activation. One possibility is that joint cage was turned upside down during dismantling, another that someone damaged the cage while trying to hammer the joint off. Or if it is brand new, never dismantled joint from an alternative parts supplier, it could be faulty.
