Best Budget Coilies for mk1 vRS

Featured Replies

hi everyone,

After 100,000 miles the suspension is starting to feel a little worse for wear.

I'm after spending at max about £400 on some coils but have seen the JOM ones seem really good for the money, too good to be true maybe!? Preferably they would be new too

Wondering if someone could recommend me a set of coil overs, not bothered about lowering much, just want it to be subtly lower i.e. 20-30 mm and ride massively harsh

Thanks everyone!

Weitec Hicon GTs seem to be the coilover of choice.

I have VMAXX - which are the same as JOM I think. I'm not too happy with the ride it's harsh and bouncy especially at the rear.

Saving up for some H&Rs to replace them.

Got jom's on our lass's mk4. Got them from Damian at dpm (site sponsor), not bad for the money.....you get what you pay for I suppose. You need vrs specific so just check what your getting. Save that bit extra and go weitecs. Had them in my old vrs and can't fault them for the money. Remember to factor in the cost of new top mounts and bearings

yeah weitecs are the way forwards. Not heard anyone slate them but have heard lots slate JOM's.

Yeah afaik the JOMS & VMAXX are the same.. Really don't want it to be bouncy I hate that.. the octy rides pretty well now so it would be a shame to ruin it I just want it to handle sharper. Then again I don't really fancy spending £800-1000 for the privilege for a car worth at best 2.5-3K!

KW Variant 3's look popular after some more searching

ta for that Si.

You say remember to factor in the cost of new top mounts and bearings? Do the kits not come with any?!

Thanks

No mate, get them from egay, tps or dealer. Not to expensive but recommended that there changed when you do the suspension

Don't get me wrong I can't fault the jom's, the rides not bad and there cheap (£170 for the golf). currently wound right down but will be raising it soon as I'm sick of catching the sump/subframe. It may even improve the ride a bit more :giggle:

just remember the cheap joms (blues) will no go on the vrs due to the droplink position.

I know this!

They used to to do reds that fit the vrs, whether they still do or not?

Thought Ap and fk are the same and weitec are cheap kw's like skoda is the cheap vw

I'm sure he will

I'd still pay the extra £60 and go with the tried, trusted and recommended tho

go weitec!you wont regret it. mine give great road feel but enough to give you a nice ride too. gives you enough range to get the stance just perfect!

Weitec are the best to go for if KWs are out of your price range. My Weitecs were £600 fitted including new top mounts, nuts and rear bump stops and 4 wheel alignment afterwards. Will be interesting to see how well Weitecs last compared to other makes as I think they only started doing mk1 VRS coilies a few years ago.

Brillaint! Has anyone used the AP's before?

There has been lots of bad press on AP on a few briskodians cars, as they are a inferior make to Weitecs and KW.

Pay the extra £60 and get the weitecs. You'll not regret it

totally agree

ap and wietec are the same.

Sorry but they are not the same.

AP, Weitec and KW are all made in the KW factory in germany, So yes they are all KW owned.

KW know that not everyone can afford the V1,V2 and V3 range so they produce variants to cover the mainstream market.

This is where Weitecs fit the bill well as they are more affordable. They are similar to material used as KW V1's apart from the outer casing being zinc coated which makes them considerably cheaper(KW are stainless)

The AP are a lower level to Weitec and do not use the same internals and springs. You can tell the minute you lower them. Weitec will go a lot lower and not have the same crashing effect as lowered AP's. AP do work ok for Golfs and none VRS's because those cars are typically 25mm higher so the AP's do not need to be lowered as much.

I would go for Weitecs.

Mind you I have just replaced my Weitecs for KW V2's as I am doing track and want more adjustment.

So will have a set of Weitecs for sale.

V2 are terrible for the Octy Mark...... I was told years ago by loads of people to avoid them like the plague!!!

Variant 1 or 3 ONLY.

The wietec TX's are the KW v2's equal.

Steve

and UNIT18 will fit them for £100 including wheel alignment

Hi Steve, yep seen those comments in the past.

For the absolute steal price i paid for them second hand i was happy to take the risk. I have completley refurbed them(good thing about KW you can get spares).

And they are better than the Weitec GT's imo, ceratianly for the very low stance my car has. So no issues from me.

I have changed my suspension over 5 times so have some experience on what works for my car. :giggle:

A lot of bad press comes from folks who try to adjust the rebound without knowing what it is doing an completely mess up there handling. Seen this on the Audi and VW forums also.

That's a really good price!

Not far from you either, they are in Milton Keynes

They've done a lot of work on mine and will be doing my SMF and clutch conversion in the coming months.
