Rumbling Octavia

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am new to this forum and in the process of buying a used Octavia VRS TDI. I have been looking for some time I thought I had hit the jackpot with 2009 limited edition one with only 22K on the clock. When I test drove it all was well except for a rumbling from the rear drives side. This increased with speed and on corners; sounded like a bearing to me; sales guy was clueless and I said that I wouldn’t do the deal until it was sorted. Anyhow he said they’d get it fixed so we good to go I said I would need to drive it again when it was fixed, still waiting a reply from them! Are bearings an issue on the Octavia, any other Octavia specific things I should look for; I must say the interiors look like they hold out well.

Thanks

Do a search on "sawtooth" rear tyres. Out of alignment rears gives uneven wear and noise - very common on octavias, golfs etc.

Get the dealer to put on two new tyres on the rear and have a proper 4 wheel alignment done.

How low were the tyres? Some can make noises reminiscent of a wheel bearing when worn, the Dunlops Sport Maxx certainly do.

Could be the sawtoothing rear tyre problem caused by incorrect suspension geometry. Do a search on here for sawtoothing, very common problem on VRS.

Tyres were about 5-6mm,saying that I did not check the inners!

Check the inners!

Will venture back and have a look.

I was also amazed to see that the avergae MPG was reading 53.6 on a trip of 409 miles!

Welcome to the vRS club..

They all make noise like that

Tyres tyres tyres tyres. What make are they ? Dunlops seem to "sawtooth" more than other but all tyres will do it at sometime until the rear suspension geometry is checked and adjusted if needed.

Mine did it and was checked and adjusted at 20K, tyres changed and didnt hear a peep from them for the next 40k.

Bridgestones on my one.

No sign of sawtoothing of any description.

Noise like a wheel bearing roaring. emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Nothing amazing on MPG. :D You will see those fidures on regular basis with light foot.

Where are you in NW? Are you close to Leeds? With that noise you describing it might be a tyre noise as well as bearing. Technician need to look at both. That is truth that tyres noise is overlooked many times and bad alignment/geometry can cause that. Proper wheel alignemnt and new tyres usualy solve problem.

I assume youre referring to 'Droning'?

Mine doesnt..Never has..and shod with Dunlop Sport Maxx GT's too!

Despite being exceedingly crap tyres..They did wear uniformingly across the tyre

I recently had a 4 point lazer alignment done just out of curiosity ( VAG Meet in Leeds)

Almost spot on on all wheels

I now have Toyo Proxes T1R's all round..The difference is night and day in terms of grip

Here is the readout and a couple of pics:

As you can see..Very little adjustment to the rear nearside was needed

They all make noise like that

No they don't.

Have you tried a different set of tyres on the rear? My guess is it will go away. .. unless you DO actually have a wheel bearing problem?

:wonder:

I haven't purchased one yet; the rumbling led me to walk away from one; especially as the dealer couldn't explain why.

Think I will go back at the weekend as the car was sooo nice :)

Where are you based? As if you close to Leeds then you more then welcome to stop by us to have a free check (as long the salesan would agree) then we can check that for you. The one on left under that car on picture - Its me :D :p. Hihi

Hi what garage would that be ? as im not sure if ive test drove that one too, ? You obviously didnt spot the dented alloy then on the same rear wheel that may be leaking as the tyre pressure light came on too on the test drive ....

Edited by jaskat

is the rear suspension adjustable

I know it's not on the topic of noise, but dont the limited edition model's also have problems with the alloy wheels too.
