Hesitant VRS, faulty MAF?

Featured Replies

My VRS sometimes hesitates on partial throttle at low revs. Breather hoses have been replaced already. I disconnected the MAF and it drove fine (warning light came up on the dash). Is it definitely a faulty MAF? If so where is the best place to get a replacement Bosch one?

Have you scanned it yet? Thats your best bet before you spend money on a new one.

Easiest way to determine if its the maf is to unplug the Maf and see how it runs. If no change then its the maf.

If it runs better with the MAF unplugged then it's a MAF fault, if it makes no difference then the MAF is ok.

Forgot to mention skoda scanned it when it went in for the coil pack recall, no faults found.

TPS if you've got a trade card. Main dealer will charge £££s.

Beware of ebay ones unless you can be sure they're genuine Bosch ones and/or have a guarantee.

I used to run a vw t4 2.5

MAF fail with in said torrance! so does not put fault codes in system!! if runs better unplugged

its the MAF at fault job done:)

as said above, unplug the MAF if it drives smoother unplugged its definitely your MAF. Keep it unplugged till your car gets sorted.

Again, avoid cheap copies like the plague (I found out the hard way) :'(

Mine feels a bit jerky hesitant below 2k rpm, so I`m tempted to think it might be the MAF. Does disconnecting the MAF completely not cause damage? Is there an uprated MAF for these cars?

Samuel

When you disconnect the MAF the ECU realises and uses a stored set of "best guess" air flow values. If the car then runs better with it unplugged you know your MAF is knackered and giving very unrealistic figures.

You can in fact run a 1.8T permanently without a MAF and have a mapper set up a set of MAF values for you to replace the default ones so the engine is optimised for performance but you'll get awful fuel economy out of it.

There are uprated MAFs for the 1.8T like the Modshack one, or you can fit a S3/Cupra R MAF which is 3" but your engine map needs to be adjusted for both of these due to the bigger diameter and you'd also need wider inlet piperwork from the airbox to the turbo.

These other MAFs aren't "uprated" in terms of they will last longer, they are more for performance modifications when you are running a bigger turbo etc.

I changed the maf on mine recently and it wasn`t that.... so have a genuine one you can have cheap if you want one

Hi Mate,

I will try disconnecting it today to see if it changes. How much do you want for your MAF, is it genuine from dealer?

Cheers,

Samuel

Hi Sammy, Its a genuine one.. took it off my car as thought the maf was faulty and replaced it... car was still same so maf was ok... I will PM you

Well this is weird, I took it off and I really can`t see or feel any difference apart from this light came on, orange exclamation with arrows going around it, worrying thing is I reconnected my MAF and the light didn`t go off!!! :/.

I only really get the hesitancy bad when its first cold... My mate said it might be a dirty EGR valve?? Whatever that is..

Only had this car a couple of weeks so still don`t understand it.

Samuel

probably the temp sensor....... changed that on mine also not long after having the car... not expensive and can be done yourself

The light will go off once re-connected within a day or two or a couple of engine re-starts.

Have you tried cleaning up the throttle body?

No I haven`t touched anything on the engine to be honest. I will have a look at the TB. Anything else I should clean?

coolant temp sensor I would look at too, you cant clean this but replacement is easy....
