Featured Replies

just wondering i m getting rid of my 1.9 tdi soon its a taxi and thinking of buying the 1.6 tdi any 1 got 1 and are they any good or are they under powered its either that or a vrs octavia . B)

No flying machine and won't win any drag races but certainly not underpowered. Keeps up fine with town and motorway traffic, well geared ( 3rd for 30mph) and very smooth power delivery.

Wouldn't hesitate to recommend

I've got a greenline se on order - i will let you now in March :D

I do airports and contract taxi work so i will be glad of the economy

The engine is well proven and more refined than the 1.9 was. I think the power is same or similar as well so you shouldn't notice to much difference.

thanks guys for the feedback

I had a good 50 mile test drive in the 1.6 tdi CR estaite this afternoon, as I am thinking of getting one for a taxi.

I wont be getting the 1.6 as its to under powered had to keep it in 3rd at 30 mph as it really struggled in 4th.

Then took the 1.9 out and its a totally different breed, yes I know its a PD unit but its much better, even had it in 5th at 30 and it still pulled strongly up to 60

In a nutshell the 1.6 might be fine for the Octy and fabia but not the superb as its to heavy

I had a remapped Superb II 1.9Tdi which was very flexible, as quick as a 2.0Tdi and yet returned a documented average fuel economy between 55k and 95k miles of 57.18mpg.

My current Superb II 1.6Tdi has only covered 9k miles, yet is returning an average 61.12mpg. I do miss the extra low down grunt and overtakes have to be planned and generally executed in third, rather than fourth or fifth as was the case with the 1.9Tdi.

That said, the 1.6Tdi is far more refined and the stop start works flawlessly.

I only wish someone could crack the encrypted ECU in order that a remap can be performed.

How many miles on each engine? Was the 1.6 new?

I wonder if the difference you experienced is the difference between a brand new, very tight engine, that wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding and a well run-in 1.9 unit. I remember my current Vectra was totally useless when brand new. That is 120PS and 280Nm pulling 1645kg so the 1.6 should be fine (110PS and 250Nm).

It had 15K on it, the 1.9 had 23K so not a lot in it

It´s good yes, but as my dad has a taxi (non Skoda) I would recomend 2.0liter. 5 people and suitcases???

Nice normal driving, uphill and passing not enough power.

No known repro for now (to my knowledge)

Well, I got a Greenline Estate in the end of September last year and for the first four hours it was just a stock one. Then I fitted a tuning box to it and so far I've been very pleased with the results. The torque and acceleration is better (the tuning box should give +27bhp and +69Nm) and it's much more fun to drive. However, due to the fact that it's quite a small engine, there's a bit of turbo lag so whenever accelerating, the best area is between 2500-3500 rpm. But I'm used to it since I've been messing around with older SAAB turbos and they also had some turbo lag.

1.6 TDi (especially the Greenline model) is the most economical choice in SuperB's model range and it does it job well with 1-4 persons inside the car but I wouldn't try to pull a trailer with it.

When I received the car, I would've thought that it's very cold at the winter time since the Greenline models don't have a parking heater but that was an incorrect thought. Actually it's quite warm inside when the engine has heaten up.

I'd recommend 1.6 TDi (especially Greenline) + some kind of tuning to it. It's really bang for the buck.

Sensonic, may I ask what tuning box you put on the 1.6tdi.

Any weird noises from engine, like injectores making knocking sound more audible

Thanks

Yes, I purchased it from www.crd-tuning.de . They don't have the tuning box for SuperB 1.6TDi on their website but they do have it on their E-bay site (http://www.ebay.de/itm/Skoda-Superb1-6-TDI-CR-105-PS-Chiptuning-Tuningbox-/400187816724?pt=DE_Autoteile&hash=item5d2d0d7b14 ). I guess it's similar to all 1.6TDi VAG company cars. They say it'd create 132 bhp, 319 Nm. I chose that company because they also have their own website (along their E-bay site) and all the user experiences I've read about their products on various website forums.

Like I said, so far the experience has been very positive. The only thing I've noticed is that the car is running on very thick fuel mixture on idle and thus it's not necessary to push the throttle at all when you're driving with the 2nd gear at morning rush hour ;)

1.6TDi has a bit harsh sound below 1700-2000 rpm so that hasn't changed at all. But I guess it's because of the characteristics of that engine.

Only getting 49.5 MPG after 9000 miles of nursing the blighter(superb estate GL11). 3 MPg better than my previous 2 litre mondeo.Any one else getting nowt like claimed figures despite driving like a vicar on mainly long runs?I'm starting to think there is somert wrong with it.

There's a post above from a member who say's he's getting 61mpg from the 1.6 TDi. - 49 is poor tho!

2.0 TDi 170 owners (manual box) should be looking at mid 40's. - me with a 170 4x4 estate is usually 42-43 mpg and upto 50 on a motorway run...
