PS3 Media Server Suggestions

Featured Replies

Looking to pop something on my server, that will pipe content to the PS3.

I had been using the imaginatively titled 'PS3 Media Server' up until now, but on my current box running Home Server 2011 (so an x64 2008R2 back end) it doesn't seem to want to play, despite fiddling about with the config to the nth degree. Perhaps it's a 64-bit issue, I wonder? Anyone running it on a similar platform successfully?

So looking for some others to try please.

Cheers,

Steve.

I'm running PS3MS on my Win7 64bit PC at home. Takes a bit of fiddling to get it to run as a service, but after that works well. Doesn't cope well with wifi though!

Used it for years! The original author stopped development and vanished, thankfully it has now been picked up by a team of people who are working on it all the time.

I'm using mediatomb on a linux server at the moment, but have also used xbmc in the past without any issues... XBMC is definitely available on Windows, but I think mediatomb is unix like OS only

Yep, I seem to remember it coming up on the XMB, but *before* I tried to install it as a service! Now I can't get it to do anything, despite uninstalling and removing the service... emoticon-0114-dull.gif

A few screenshots would be appreciated Babs, if you can. Setup is wired, so no wireless issues to contend with.

Yes, I'd been using it for a while on my old server and then noticed that v1.50 was available when I went to set it up on the new box.

Yep, needs to be a Windows application. I'll take a look at XBMC, thanks.

Cheers. Spotted that, but it's for WHS V1 and my new box is on V2 (2011). In some ways I'm wishing I'd not upgraded, as there's nowhere near as many plug-ins available - but there are advantages in other areas :S

Will give XBMC a go - looks pretty decent.

I use WHS2011 to stream to my PS3 with no add ins and no issues.

I only have .avi files though, are you trying to stream MKV files or similar?

Another PS3MS user

I even use on my Sumivison streamer box thingy

A mixture of file formats Dave. I have used the in-built streaming, but PS3MS was better at handling all the formats.

Had a look at XBMC and was impressed with the look and feel. There's no option to run this on the PS3 though.

I did have another look over the PS3MS config and have it set and running as a service, but it's just not picking up the PS3. Got the network settings to IP filter to the PS3's IP (static) but to no avail. I'll go off and trawl through their dedicated forums I think.

Cheers,

Steve

You could just get an Xbox, it is the better games system, after all...

Don't start you!

:p

I've had issues with 1.50 that i've not had previously with previous ps3mediaserver versions - so it might be worth using an older version...

...I rolled back to an older version after I realised that forcing transcoding wasn't working.

Is TVersity still around? A lot of mates used that for streaming and/or transcoding to both 360 and PS3.

Also have a WHS 2011 box, however I ditched my PS3 as a media player as it doesnt support MKV and most....er...content....these days is in MKV. Bought a WD TV Live for 50 quid that plays everything(other media players are available). All my media is just on a network share on the WHS box, WDTV box plays pretty much any format and it all works great. :)

Was just pondering that earlier actually. Will give it a go later. I also have some v1.50 workrounds to try, which may have cropped up as WHS 2011 is 64-bit.

Not sure either. Used it.... a long time ago. Will check emoticon-0148-yes.gif

I know there's plenty of alternatives but as the PS3 is sitting there, and I use it as a Freeview recorder with PlayTV, and my BluRay player etc - it would be nice to keep everything 'under one roof'. It also keeps SWMBO happy, as she's familiar with the setup and I don't get earache for having yet another box of tricks emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Thanks everyone.

Yeah, lack of mkv support just killed it for me else I would still use it. Plus wife doesn't get to use the controls anyway.

Are you talking MKV support natively on the PS3, or through the PS3 Media Server program?

Natively, don't want to bother with transcoding, works but isn't great for HD content(fast forward/pause etc).

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions guys.

Just to update, I now have PS3MS 1.50 working properly - hooray :)

Went back to v1.40 but had the same problem. Log file looked fine, as it had done with 1.50 so I decided to investigate the server-side of things a bit more. There were a few support posts reporting issues similar to mine, and users trying to use it on a x64 OS. I checked that the 'wrapper' PS3MS uses for operating as Windows service was working properly, which it was.

So then looked at Windows firewall permissions. This turned out to be the critical issue, especially as the firewall built into Server 2008 R2 (upon which Home Server 2011 is based) is fairly powerful and feature-rich. So I tried adding explicit inbound and outbound rules for the default PS3MS port on 5001, for both TCP and UDP. Bingo emoticon-0103-cool.gif

With a few tests carried out, I then removed 1.40 and re-installed 1.50 and all is working fine emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Just in case anyone else has the same issue.

Cheers,

Steve
