As I change my cars roughly every two years the time has come to move on from my 110 2wd Yeti. In summary I changed from an Octavia 1.9PD elegance to a 2.0 TDi Ambition in 2010. The car has been faultless apart from a fuel sender unit that was changed under warrenty. The only gripe with the car has been the ride quality on the 17" wheels. Having said that the road holding on those rims has been brilliant. In terms of what to replace it I wanted something with the same quality and made the following list:

Quasqai: reliable with good resale value but too expensive and unsure about the looks,

ix 35: 5 year warrenty but too much bling around the dasboard and don't like the looks

Sportage: nice looking car, 7 year warrenty, bland to drive after the Yeti and dealers looking way over the odds to change

Superb: nice car, loads of luxury, outside budget.

Octavia:I realy loved the last one I had and thought long and hard about it,the only niggles being that ESP is not standard, I wanted leather seats this time and the model is due to be changed in 2013.

Hyundai i40: that bling again and residuals.

Another Yeti:

And the winner is (drum roll):

The Yeti.

This time its the Greenline in elegance trim with Amunsden radio. I went for the Greenline because I wanted the extra economy and the 16" wheels. I've only had it a few days and am happy with it apart from one thing (never satisfied). The engine, road and wind noise are very noticeable compared to my previous 2.0litre. The 1.6Tdi is very noticeable compared to the 2.0 under acceleration. I suspect that one of the ways that they reduced the cars weight was to reduce the sound proofing. The conti tyres might also be to blame, I'm not sure as this is the first time I've had a car with them fitted. The intrusion is noticeable even with the radio on. All I know is that I will need to take some steps to reduce this as it is spoiling what is otherwise a very good car, any suggestions or views would be greatly appreciated.

glad to hear you kept faith with the Monster and I'd tend to agree with a couple of your observations particularly the engine, although my experience comes from three days (400 + miles) driving an Octavia II FL with that engine. The other point being the Conti tyres, which I suspect are PremiumContact2. Had these on a number of cars from new including my current Yeti. If I keep it long enough to wear them out I won't be replacing like for like shall we say.

Glad its not just me then, on tick over the engine sounds more like the old 1.9PD in my previous octavia than the silky smooth 2.0 110 in my first Yet. The gear change is also more notchy but that might be down to it being new. The tyres are Premium Contact 2 alright, listening to them this morning I think they might be the biggest culprit, if so I'll not be replacing like for like when the time comes either. The Nankang SV1 winter tyres produced less tyre noise than these. All in all it looks like I might be investing in some sound proofing such as that mentioned in other posts.

Other than that the car is well thought out, I just have to learn how to get the best out of these new gear ratios.

Just to be different (actualy SWMBO had an input here and didn't like the silver I initialy was going to chose) I went for the same colour again.

Wow! An exact copy of what you had had before! Your neighbours will think you are getting behind in updating your car every two years! hehehe Very scarce colour - a peculiar colour to my eyes but without choice we'd all be driving black Ford Model Ts now!

Haven't you heard covert car changes are the future. The neighbours might spot the black roof rails as opposed to the silver ones on the last one, that and the noiser engine. Funny enough Rosso was the most popular Yeti colour sold here last year, so each to his own. I like the steel grey but SWMBO doesn't like it so as I got the spec I wanted I let her have the majority vote on the colour. Having said that I wouldn't have gone with it if I didn't like it myself. Now where did I park that Model T?

That is very covert! It is like Steve Jobs that always got the exact same Mercedes SL in the exact same colour every 6 months just so that he can get around the Californian loophole stating you can drive around TOTALLY without a number plate for a maximum of six months. So people for years thought he just never got a plate when in fact over those years he had had a new car every 6 months! Bless.

I might try that altough they might spot something if the facelift model has any radical changes. Now if only I could design an electronic device that every wants the latest model of every few months.

I'm surprised you shortlisted the Sportage and the iX35, was it because of the 7 and 5 years warranties respectively??

If this is the case, I have to ask what for if you will be changing them after only two years????

You have made the sensible choice and plumped for another Yeti, I had a feeling you might do that, and it was what I was going to suggest anyway. :yes:

I liked the look of the sportage and considered the Hyundai in terms of spec. I was disappointed that the Sportage didn't live up to its looks, it just wasn't anything special to drive. Also the rear seats diddn't fold flat so it was nowhere near as versitile as the Yeti. In relation to the warrenties I considered them as usefull for residuals come resale time. I also had it in the back of my mind that I possibly might want to hold onto this car a little longer. All in all I am a Skoda fan at heart, having been won over initialy by the Octavia the Yeti does everything I need a car to do.

I researched this topic before ordering a Yeti. Generally, it seems, that the 1.6 110 bhp diesel is the weakest in the range being noisier and less refined than the larger diesels. I thought it was just me but BBC Top Gear review also thought that the 110 bhp engine was the weakest of the bunch. I also thought that the lower suspended Greenline (even on 16" wheels) had a harsher noisier ride than other Yeti's on 16" wheels - 17" wheels even worse!

I test drove most variants before deciding on the spec I have ordered - due for make week 8.

I have a month old greenline elegance and its very quiet with minimal internal / engine noise. In fact it seems quieter than the 140 bhp i test drove on 17" wheels and im running fairly high tyre pressure and getting great milage.

However i have noticed the bolero unit has started to rattle when engine is at low revs pulling anyone else noticed the same.???

I've only had mine a few days so no rattle noticed from the radio yet, altough mine came with the Amunsden as a free upgrade but that shouldn't make a difference. Just out of curiosity what mileage are you getting?

The 1.6 has 105bhp, was it not the 2.0 110 that Top Gear were refering to? Having said that I found not problems with the 110 over the time I owned it, more than adequate torque when and where it was needed. I agree that the 1.6 sounds a bit weedy compared to the 2 litre, maybe because it has to work harder.I find the ride quality to be much better on the 16" compared to the 17" even with the lowered suspension. There is a mild trade off on handling but much of that could be the "pumped up" low rolling resistance tyres. I intend to play around a little with the tyre pressure to see what works best for me. I have to say that I am happy with the car, the only gripe I have is that the Greenline appears noiser than the 110 but I'm still convinced part of this is a reduction in sound proofing to save weight.

Im very pleased with the milage im getting between 550/640 miles to a tankfull brim to brim depending on my heavy foot :rofl: and if I drive short distances also keeping the heated seats on makes a difference, once my bums warm there turned off. B) First tankfull wasnt to good as the engine was bedding in but its freeing up all the time now. And the milage is getting better and better ive covered just under 2000 miles so far.

Between 50/58 mpg i think depending on driving style allthough I may be wrong :no: not to shabby for a fully loaded brick lol.

Sounds good for an engine thats still tight and using winter grade diesel.
