Six Speed

Featured Replies

Done a little research and from what i gather, the 6 speed manual gearbox as found in the leon cupra and TT would be a straight swap on to the engine of our VRS's. However, i would expect issues around the clutch (simplish fix) and gar linkage mechanism (not a simple fix). Has anyone done this before and resolved these issues?

Also, has anyone got a comparison of gear ratios between the two gearboxes?

Thanks

clutch, flywheel, starter, selector cables, clutch line, drive shafts(?) - pretty much anything/everything that goes anywhere near the gearbox needs swapping. no clue on ratios

Think the 6th gear is the same as 5th on the the vrs no real point in changing gearboxes really only difference is that the lower gears are lower. Only way to make it beneficial is by changing 6th

I had the same thoughts on this!! but that quickly changed when I was given a quote of around £800-£1000 including fitting / parts and Vat of course.

Now I love 5 gears

I would only change if something happened to my current gearbox.

5 speed's 5th gear has the same ratio as 6 speed's 6th. lower gear ratios are different => more gear changes...

i see no point in doing the swap if the car has no serious power mods done

In the standard petrol 6speed O2M box the 6th is marginally higher ratio than the final drive ratio of the 5speed box, but not enough to really be noticable in normal driving.

On the road, the shorter ratios do equal more gear changes, which I found a tab annoying.

If you have enough power, you can use a diesel O2M, but with sub-300ish bhp probably not a good match.

I have exactly 120km/h (75 mph) at 3000 rpm in 5th gear. Is the VRS the same?

Its around that figure

The idea behind the closer ratio's is to get faster acceration, as in a Scooby Type RA or similar

The O2M are rated to 350 ft/lbs of torque too.

What is the 5 speed rated too?
