New car and no claims

Featured Replies

Hi all,

As I've posted in another forum I've just ordered a new Fabia Monte Carlo and I'm currently waiting on delivery - estimated end of April, but I don't have a build week yet.

However I'm in a bit of a predicament regarding insurance though and I wonder if anyone can offer any advice. Basically, my existing car (an old Ford Escort) has decided to pop it's clogs. It's still got 10 months tax+MOT, but the insurance runs out at the end of March. If I let that lapse and declare the vehicle off road will I lose my 4 years no claims when I get the new car?

If I will, any suggestions as to the best way to go? Can I get short term insurance anywhere to tide it over, and am I even allowed to do so since it currently won't even start?

Any suggestions hugely appreciated!

No claims usually stays on file for a year or two... ask the insurance company and I'm sure it'll be fine.

No problem at all as Boss Fox says - some companies will accept a one-year old NCD proof, others two years. In 2009 I went six months without a car - went back to my previous company, although they did write out to me for NCD proof - phoned them (Elephant) and sorted straight away (fortunately I got through to someone in Cardiff and not some offshore call centre).

Don't forget if you cancel your policy you will lose this years NCB. So it depends on the value of the refund whether you think its worth claiming the money back.

I'm pretty sure NCB's last at least 2-3 years dependant on your NEW insurer. Remember to keep the certificate, and / or your renewal notice for proof.

Excellent, that sounds pretty reasonable. I won't be cancelling the current insurance, so I should get this years NCB. I just want to be able to SORN the car and get the tax back and scrap it before the new one arrives.

Thanks for the help.
