VCDS Buy or pay for use?

Featured Replies

Hi all

My question is:

Do I buy a VCDS system for around £250.00 for my Yeti or do I pay for some kind soul to do the biz for me?

Not being a Car business person but fairly good on IT/Car Electrics etc would it be an investment for me to buy and charge for my services or do I pay for someone elses service for the occasional use.

What sort of price would I expect to pay for a tweak to my Yeti (dials initialise and mph display)?

Regards

Depends how much use you think you'll get out of it. As for looking to make money from buying it, that's not really how it works on here :)

I'd check the Owners Map and see if there's anyone close to you, and then get in touch with them:

I tend to ask members for 'a drink' be it literally or the folding type, this way they are always getting VFM, one guy (off another VAG forum) got quite insulted when I said £40 was too much (I had only done a simple scan!) he said if I didn't take it then he would not come back again! so I agreed on the condition that whenever he came back again it would be at a discounted price - he agreed to that - and came back twice :giggle:

I have found that the older the car is the more generous the 'drink' tends to be :wonder: but I have only ever felt insulted once by the offers - this person wanted me to drive 50 miles to him and give me £5 for 'my troubles' now I certainly do not do it to make money but on the other hand I will not be 'used' either (the trip would of cost me £10 in fuel alone).

If you are willing to do other peoples cars with the understanding that it may well take a few years to cover the costs of the interface, then go for it, but for the majority of people it is better to get someone who already had VCDS to do it for you.

Having the relevant tools to do the coding is one thing, knowing how to do them is totally different.

If your car is stock, maybe not being kept long term, pay per use from someone (like me :D)

If the car is tuned, being kept for the long term, and is quite old (like my car :D) then buying VCDS yourself is a no-brainer!
