old v new gearbox, which one?

Featured Replies

what difference is there in the performance/ drivabilty between the old and new gear boxes in the vrs? which is better?

A matter of preference I should think.

The older gearbox gives lower rpms in the higher gears, so is better for economy, but the newer one has faster acceleration.

oh right! i thought the older one had the faster accelaration. thats good cause i got the new one! he he he.

I only know how to put the fuel in but how does the gearbox make the car accelerate better.

Presumeably all the bhp/torgue is all the same.I would have thought it just changes the times/when you change gear.

Go easy on an office boy.I just don't understand the physics :o

When did the gearbox change anyway ?

Simply put (ie how I understand it ;)), a shorter ratio gearbox means that the engine will spin up to maximum revs quicker. This means that as you accelerate, you'll reach maximum power quicker so you'll need to grab the next gear quicker. This can lead to quicker acceleration (although it could possibly lead to a slower acceleration if you needed an extra gear change over a car with longer ratios).

Longer ratios mean it takes longer to reach full power and therefore the car is likely to cruise at lower revs in top gear (so it's more economical) and also have a greater top speed, assuming there is enough power to reach the end of the rev range.....

Gran Turismo on the PS/2 explains it far better than that, and also lets you experiment with the settings :D

Thanks Chris. It also gives me another excuse to stop faffing about and get GT4 :D

Are there any published figures for the differences? Actually I bet there are somewhere on the site.Think I will go and have a look.

The new box is shorter so it's quicker through the gears as chris explained. The older one was longer giving lower revs at a higher speed. I'm guess the Older box might have more of a top speed than the shorter box?

Or atleast that's how it workd in GT4

I've never seen anything official... but the spec has changed somewhat. In the earlier days, I am sure I saw 0-60 as 9.6, 126 mph top speed and 56 MPG. Later I seem to see same 0-60, 128 mph top speed and 52 MPG.

The shorter geared car wont really be any quicker in absolute terms, but it will have quicker in-gear acceleration. For example, the newer box is a second quicker from 50-70 in 5th, and about 2 seconds quicker at the same benchmark in 6th.

Look under gallery and you find the paper from Skoda

Another way of looking at it is that the new gearbox's 6th gear is almost the same as the old gearbox's fifth gear - which means the old gearbox's 6th gear is effectively an overdrive...

What speed do you guys with short-ratio boxes get to in 3rd? In my old 'box', I reach just over 80mph at top revs.
