Aero wipers missing

Featured Replies

I am a proud owner of a brand new skoda superb 1.8T. I only received the car 10 days ago and I was impressed. I hope my first impression stays that way.

Unfortunately my car came with the classic wipers instead of the advertised aero wipers that are standard for all trims. (mine is elegance trim). The dealer claims that there was some problem with the aero wipers and the manufacturer stopped suplying them for some time now. Its hard to beleive that this is the true reason. Maybe some of you know something about it. Any information will be appreciated.

Tis true.

Aero wipers on them can be terrible sometimes, not sure on the reason. My dad had a Superb Elegance with them on and had to change his blades every 5,000 miles as they started smeering (especially the n/s one).

Spec has now changed back.

I dont have a problem with, and find them heaps better than standard wipers.

More and more manufacturers are speccing the aero wipers now, and I cant belive Skoda has changed back to the older style. I would suggest you investigate and question further...I would.

Checked with my dealer..aero wipers are still standard fit.

I have an (04) Octavia with classic blades, but in my previous job I had a Passat (52) with aero blades.

They were awful!

The problem I had was their failure to clear an arc of the screen about 30mm each side of the central fitting point on the driver's side, when travelling over about 50mph. The reason seemed to be the massive tension placed on the blades to make them curve so that the ends touch the screen with sufficient pressure. To see what I mean, lift the arm of an aero blade up, so the blade is off the glass. You will notice that the blade curves so the ends are much nearer the glass than is the middle.

Normally, the spring tension of the wiper arm is enough to overcome this and hold the entire length of the blade on the glass. This remains the case when the wiper is on the 'up' sweep, as it is forced onto the glass by the airflow over it.

However, on the 'down' sweep the blade flutters away from the glass in the middle of its length.

The reason is that the centre line of the wiper arm is not shared by the centre line of the blade at the point where the components meet.

The effect is that, on the 'up' wipe the blade is being pushed by the arm, so it tends to dig in and contact the glass positively, however, on the 'down' sweep it is trailing the arm, so is not pushed against the glass in the same manner. Add to this the effect of the airflow, which is to now lift the blade from the screen. When combined with the tension in the blade that is trying to lift the centre section from the screen it all becomes too much, and that vital section lifts just enough to leave a 50-60mm unwiped section, which is right in front of the driver's eyes!.

My dealer changed the blades on numerous occations, and also the OS wiper arm, all to no avail.

Eventually, I insisted they fit the classic version arms and blades. The lease company could have stopped this, but the dealer got round it by getting me to speak to VW technical while I was on his premises. The guy at VW said thay had had some problems with aero blades, and arranged the supply of the earlier design at no charge.

When fitted, the problem was completely fixed.

This is one reason I looked for an Octavia with classic blades!!

I don't wish to offend anyone, but I would not give aero blades the time of day. They, as far as I am concerned, are a victory of styling over effectivness,

I've got an Aero Wiper conversion on my Octy and they're fabulous. Best 29.99 I've spent on car bits for a long time.

My boss has a '55 plate Superb (or did until he got slammed up the rear by a Megane yesterday - The Megane promptly imploded but the Superb seems OK apart from a slight twist to the rear end and the front damage where he was pushed into the vehicle in front). That has the standard wipers, as do all the other 05 and 55 platers on the local dealer's forecourt. Most of the earlier ones (like my other colleague's) that I've seen have the Aero Wipers.

There have been supply problems due to Champion taking over the manufacture of them from Bosch
