Gearbox oil

Featured Replies

Hello all

I'm looking to give my car a little once over next month and I wanna change my gearbox oil but I'm not sure where the drain hole is. I think I've found the filler hole. Do you need a new bung like when you do a engine oil change?

Should be a 17mm hex bolt somewhere on the back of the rear of the transmission which is the drain plug. I think the plug ideally needs to be replaced as with an engine oil change but it's not vital.

You'll need just over 2 litres of oil, fill until it starts coming out of the check/fill hole

Just over 2 litres? Tps tell me it's 1.9 from new. I've only ordered 2 litres lol

This may sound silly but a little tip for you - make sure you can undo the filler hole before you go and undo the drain plug. I've seen people do this before lol ;) . I don't know what grade of oil is used in the Octi, but when I did my Signum last year I used castrol SMS-X and a little tube of molislip also just to ease things along. .

I'm pretty sure its 2 litres. You do need a bit more anyway to flush through with both the filler and drain bolts undone to clear out any crap before you put the new stuff in.

If they're supplying you with 1.9 litres they'll probably give you two 1 litre bottles anyway.

I changed the gearbox oil few moths ago (specialized VAG service) ,1.8L oil needed 75W90 Aral

The gear box is smooth and you can slide easy into gears no matter how cold is outside (last night was -13 deg C)

What is left from 2L

when You buy the oil is much easy to fill the gearbox if the bottle comes with a pipe like this one

I dont know if i thinking of another car, but did i not read somewhere the front should be lifted as the standard height of the filler plug is too low??

refill should be done on the level

make sure you use genuine G060 gear oil - a search will reveal the code

1.9 litres is required for the refill - 2 bottles will be plenty

the one on the side is the fill hole, the drain one is the same size too - 17mm hex the size

1.9l of Genuine oil. I used some generic 74 -90 and altho it was the correct grade it made the box notchy as hell! just filled it till it fell out the filler hole. Cost £11inc from TPS.
