Water ingress - advice please

Featured Replies

Hello All,

My 06 plate has suffered the usual water ingress problems. Thanks to the advice and guidance found on this forum I've managed to get the carpets dried out and also found and repaired some corroded wiring joints so i now have all my interior lights working again (very pleased with myself!) However, i've hit two stumbling blocks;

Firstly, although i've cleared the blocked drains in the battery well, and all the gunk around the Pollen filter housing I can't for the life of me work out how to remove the pollen filter housing so that i can more effectively re-seal it. I have removed the three nuts so the housing is loose, but it is tightly wedged in by the plastic protection at the bottom of the windscreen which seems to be immovable. Any Advice?

Secondly, Having put all the carpet and glove box and passenger seat etc back in place, I'm now getting an airbag malfunction dashboard warning. I am assuming that i've inadvertantly done something to trigger the malfunction - should I be concerned and can i reset it?

thanks

To remove the pollen filter housing you must pull off both wiper arms - a puller is usually needed to prevent damage. Then remove the two small plastic trims fitted to the bonnet hinge bars (each held with 1 Torx screw). Remove the 2 (I think) metal clips securing the wiper arm trim. Run a bead of WD-40 along the bottom of the screen where it meets the trim and very carefully lever the wiper trim strip away from the screen - at right angles to it using a broad blunt scraper. The trim is very brittle - don't bend it - and the screen is fragile at this point. Remove the trim very carefully towards the rear of the car (that's why you removed the hinge trims).

Unclip the gutter which runs over the pollen filter housing (brittle again) and finally unbolt and lift out the housing.

The outer foam seal will be split, sodden and useless. Replace with mastic strip AKD 497 010 04R 10 as detailed in VW TSB 443/06. They've known all about this crappy detail for a long time...

Reassembly is the reverse of - but clean out the trim groove and lubricate with WD-40 before gently pressing it back. The windscreen is fragile here.

thanks Rotodiesel for the detailed reply. i'll get myself a 'wiper puller' and have a go at the next dry opportunity.

Hopefully this thread will supplement some of the other excellent guides for preventing this problem and fixing this ridiculous design fault.

with Reference to my first post regarding the Airbag sensor/warning - There are some threads on this site that suggest that my fault may be linked to the fact that i removed the passenger seat. In doing so i disconnected a couple of wires. I assumed that these were the foot light and something to do with the seatbelt warning light thing.

Were either of those wires actually linked to an airbag system ? Can anyone shed some light on this?

I am conscious that I hadn't disconnected the battery at the time i removed the seat so this could have triggered something - would be grateful for any authoritative advice.

thanks again

I think if you removed the seat, and the ignition has been on with the seat removed, then a fault will be logged and won't clear by itself. You need to use VCDS/VAGCOM to clear.

The yellow plug under the seat is an airbag plug, if the ignition is turned on with any airbag plug disconnected then the light will be on the dash and you need either someone with VCDS or a dealer to turn it back off again.

Thanks again for the replies - mind at now at rest.... Will seek out a friendly VCDS owner to reset.
