Brake Disc Screw?

I have recently decided to replace the front discs on my fabia cos they're in an awful state.

However, I have accidently stripped the head out of the screw. :Z

I am gonna have to drill it out.

Here's the question....

Do i actually need to replace the screw? I have been told that they arent needed for safety etc.

So could i get away without having to replace them and just leave them empty?

Obviously Il purcase some new ones from that reputable auction site ;)

and in the mean time make do without.

The screw is there to locate the disc so that the wheel stud holes line up nicely, it's the wheel bolts that hold the disc on, so you should be fine without it.

You don't actually need them as the location of the disc is governed by the wheel bolts. However they do make it easier to keep the discs on when putting the caliper back on but you can hold the disc with a wheel bolt instead with a load of washers.

No you don't need the screw for safety. The brake caliper/pads will hold the disc in place when your removing the wheels.

The only reson it's there is to hold the disc on when you have to faf with the pads/calipers......as it stops the disc falling of....other than that.....no use what so ever......a new one from a dealer is only a few pence anyway!!..... B)

The discs on my GF's Toyota Starlet seem to be held without a screw, just the wheel bolts, as standard.

You should get new scresw with the new discs. The Brembo discs I fitted to my Octy did.

Do you have a dremel or similar you could use to cut a groove in the head of the screw and then use a normal flathead screwdriver to remove it?

With the fact you have wheel bolts it will be so much easier having a screw in too! Trying to put a wheel back on without a screw to stop the disk spinning is a pain in the booty!

Of course you could always buy a VAG plastic or aluminium "locating pin" that is supplied with cars without disc securing screws (the pins can be handy in helping you keep clean if you get a puncture) - just get a SS set or two from "the bay" as you intend to do, and maybe get a locating pin from VAG.

never got new screws with the disc :(

they were only standard ones tho, no performance discs...no money see ;)

Wheel changes are so much easier when the hubs have studs, I'm converting my hubs from boolts to studs soon, saves many minutes in tyre changes, stops you loosing your temper and just generally makes life so much easier :) well worth changing them if your like me; wheels off every time you clean the car

i dunno why all manufacturers dnt use studs tbh!

oh well never mind. :p

We convert all our rally cars to studs as a matter of cause! It takes a single corner tyre change from 3 mins to little over 1 min. I dont know why they aren't fitted as standard tbh would make life somuch easier

Yes you're right :) Too many different technical terms :doh::D

And studs also create better clamping/torque force.

The easiest way to remove the screw is rotate the disc around so the screw is where the caliper was if that makes sense so you can hit the back of the disc, give it a good club and it will ping the head straight off the screw and you normally can wind the thread out as its the head that gets corroded in.

thats a good idea! might try that next time! ;)

i just drilled it through and the head popped off that way!

luckily the other side was alright and screwed out normally!!
