2.0 tdi 140 bhp worth the £4000 extra?

Featured Replies

Hi.

As I live in Norway, and the taxes for cars are really high, there is a £4000 premium on the 2.0 tdi 140bhp over the 1.6 tdi 105bhp...

Is it worth the extra money, and what would you choose?

Hi, it's a lot of money but worth every penny.

Not a huge difference in mpg but there is a huge difference in torque and overall feel

buy the 1.6 and have the engine remaped you will then have the same power.

Remapped by whom? To date, the encrypted ECU has defeated all of the big remapping names. I'd have my Greenline remapped in a flash it it were a relatively simple 'plug and play' excerise.

As for whether the 140CR is worth a £4,000 premium over the 1.6CR; I'd say not if it was my own money.

If I was comparing secondhand examples and was not a company car driver, then the answer would probably be in favour of the 140CR, or even a 170CR.

Until the 140/170CR engines get stop/start and regenerative braking, the 1.6CR Greenline makes far more financial sense to a high mileage (30k miles per year) company car user.

Hi, Kaj.

Fellow victim of the norwegian taxation policy here.

Was pondering on the exact same question a year ago, but found out eventually that the answer was already given, as I simply could not afford the 140 bhp engine. Love the car, and despite having no choice but to love the engine as well, it actually performs far beyond my initial expectations. A bit timid and lagging at low speeds, but other than that it feels efficient and agile, and I have little problems keeping up with traffic and overtaking even pulling a loaded trailer.

Where am I going with this? If you can afford it, go for the 140 bhp:P I suspect I will be fed up with the engine quite a bit before my normal vehicle change interval would dictate trip to the dealer. Frequent car change is expensive as well, especially in Norway.

If I moved to GB, I would sign up for a v6 fresh off the boat.

Hello Norwegian fellows!

I live in Finland where the automobile tax policy is incredibly high. I think that only Danish automobile taxation is higher than ours ;)

Well, for the sake of our company car policy and Finnish automobile taxation I chose SuperB Greenline (1.6TDi) Estate. But before I ordered the car I made some research whether there would exist any kind of tuning possibilities for 1.6TDi. Well, there are only few companies which offer remapping for 1.6TDi but there are at least half a dozen companies which offer tuning boxes for 1.6TDi. Since my car is company's car, I needed to get a tuning device which is easily removable.

I chose three the most interesting suppliers and sent some e-mails to them and did some Google search. Finally I chose to purchase a tuning box from German CRD-Tuning which has a great variety of tuning boxes for different car brands. After reading some positive feedback in different webforums, I ordered a tuning box from them. I received it two weeks earlier than I received my car (the car delivery was delayed). I drove approx. 4 hours without that tuning box and then fitted it to its place. After driving a while I noticed how the torque had increased but the bad point with the tuning box is that it will only boost the standard torque and power, it cannot alter the power and torque curves by giving more at very low/high revs, i.e. broaden the aforementioned curves. However, if you know the place of peak power and torque of 1.6TDi, that's not a problem at all as long you'll keep the revs at that section.

The supplier claims that with the tuning box the car will create 132bhp, 319Nm at max. Well, it's not the same than 2.0TDi but close to that. Needless to say that the turbo lag is longer with 1.6TDi than it's with 2.0TDi but if you can live with that and know how to handle it, it OK.

Hello fellow Norwegian :)

I ordered my car early in January, and I went for the 140. Yes, it is a bit more expensive, but it sure will be easier to sell when that time comes aswell. And you will have more fun with it ;) But go to your local dealer, try out both cars, and then make up your mind :)

I always knew I was going for the 140, but when the time for ordering came, I started to look more and more towards the 170. The prize difference there is also about 4000£, and to be honest with you I thought that was to much pr hp to be a resonable buy for me.

Conclusion: I think it is well worth the money upgradeing it to a 140, as long as the money "dont ruin you" ;)

since you started a "who has a bigger one" contest, I bet you can't beat Israeli (import) taxation on cars: 113% to 128%

:'(

Oh wow! :S

I think Danmark has approx. the same taxation percentage.

Until 2002, importing a car to Finland as a private person was strongly discriminatory (taxwise) compared to importing companies. The Finnish covernment tried to project the companies which get their living from importing cars to Finland. Finally a guy who brought a Mercedes from Germany sued the Finnish covernment and he had such a good attorney who could claim to free trade policy within EU countries and Finnish covernment had to change their automobile taxation laws.

Well, if a Finnish citizen is going to import a car to Finland, the automobile taxation is still based on automobile price table provided by a private company (and used by Finnish customs) and not on the price the one has actually paid for his/her car. Bummer :( So the price of the imported car is compared to a similar car sold in Finland and tax is determined from that price. That's just BS.

If sometimes, I would be insane enough to buy a car with a manual gearbox, I would buy the cheapest version possible. But I don`t think that I`ll ever be insane enough to do that..... :giggle: at least I hope so. Greenlines 105 hp is more than enough for me, though. Luckily I drive a car with that engine only a few days a year....

I have the 170bhp for over 3 years now and I don't think I'd be able to cope with only 105bhp. I got a 105bhp for the day when I was thinking of getting the Superb and was glad I did. If you can live with the lack of performance that's fine but if you're going to use it, get it! When I returned the car after having it for the day I was certain of two things, 1). I was definitely going to buy the Superb and 2). I was definitely going for the 170bhp option.

In a country where you can drive max. 100 km/h in wintertime, it makes no difference to me how much power the car has. It`s more up to how you use that power....

Ps. Volvo has now it`s bigger models with that smallest diesel and automatic gearbox. Too bad that skoda hasn`t..... :'(

Hi, I'm also norwegian, and bought my Superb with the 140bhp diesel. Absolutely worth it as i tested the 1.6 tdi in an Octavia. Of course it was adequate, but I would'nt consider doing any overtaking...But, I also considered the 160bhp petrol with the 7 speed dsg, and frankly I regret that I did'nt go for that (tested it in an A4 and it was absolutely great, even with a multitronic). Especially now when the taxation of diesels are rising in norway.

So my advice is 160bhp petrol, with the dsg of course! And it is cheaper also, about ten grand.

Thanks for all the good advice.

Arghhhhh, decisions, decisions, but I'm leaning towards the 140 bhp engine.

This is how I've spec'd the car in my mind so far:

Superb 2.0 TDI 140 bhp combi Elegance

Alarm

Electric back lid

Alcantara seats

Sun-Set

Diesel heater/furnace

Amundsen nav. with DAB

Panorama sun roof

Front/rear parking sensors

Rough Road package

GSM III handsfree

Anything I MUST have/should not include???

If the money is the problem in this case, I would easily have skipped the expensive panorama roof, and 'added those' money into the 140 CR engine :) But for all I know, the panorama might be something you'd REALLY want, and then this post all of a sudden looses it's 'point' :p

Yeah, my wife has put down a veto on getting the panorama sunroof. She also doesn't want an automatic... i.e. no DSG. What men do to please women.. ;);)

I'll be saving around £8000 on buying the car new from Denmark, so I think I'll go for the 140 since she's getting the panorama... B)

i would recommend heated rear seats at only £2oo also the columbus is a really good piece off kit you get so much more than sat nav with this unit -sd card reader- voice control shows the car on screen when parking and more bin the glass roof and buy the columbus you wont be sorry.

Bill: Can you tell me what the differences between Amundsen and Colombus is? There is s 1100 pounds difference in the prize, and to be honest, I havent found the 'wow factor' that justifies that prize at all..

There is an SD slot on Amundsen.

I mean, if you want to use that amount of money on a system like the colombus, why not add a few more pounds and get one of the best pioneer systems? :)

If I were in your place (luckily I`m not...) I would buy that DSG and change the wife..... :giggle:
