ASR and ESP, How hard can it be?

Featured Replies

Just wondering, my Fabia 1.4 16V elegance (2000 plate) was bought without ASR or ESP (no buttons on the dash so i presume i dont have them)

How difficult and expensive would it be to retro fit it?

afterall the car could have it, so im sure the ecu can support it, just a matter of wiring it in?

so in the fine words of Jeremy Clarkson, How hard can it be??

Very I would say,( 650 for unit plus fitting, then warning lights etc} and not reliable if a Teeves 60 ,waste of money, no value added to the car and half the cst of it, cheaper to swop to one with it

The Fabias use Bosch ABS units, not Conti-Teves

Ok, cheers mate, still will be dear though

Just learn to control your clutch & throttle :)

Very dear. The Conti-Teves units can often be recoded for different features (I had a PDF somewhere with all the codings on for EDL, ASR, ESP, and increasingly "safe" combinations thereof) so if it did have one of those then the existing unit may have been able to do it cheaply. The Bosch unit can't, so would need replacing.

It's not just the main ABS/ASR module.......you also need to fit the extra "brain & gyro sensor" which lives either under the passenger seat or the centre dash console ...then you have the problem of making it work with that engine signals as I don't think it was ever avaliable in the VAG group for that engine!!..... EDIT....

Your car should have ASR.....my sept 2000 build 1.4 16v AUB Elegance has it as it was standard fit!!!!!.....

So did my Comfort (albeit a 2001 car). . .

Does it but a light up on the dash as part of the statup sequence? (I've never noticed it on the Golf/Polo, but I only really look at the glow plug lights.)

Cassette was standard fit on all models/trim specs....cruise was not standard until later on.........you should have ASR/EDL/ABS, elec front and rear windows, elec/heated mirrors, heated front seats, rear speakers, chrome internal door handles/door pins....these are main points.... B)

yea i have all of them, but not asr, theres no switch on the centre console and theres definately nothing stopping my wheels spinning :)

When you switch the igntion on (but not the engine) does a light with either ASR or a car/skid symbol light up on the dash?????? whilst the electronics does it's self test.

Just learn to control your clutch & throttle :)

how do you brake an individual wheel using either the clutch or the throttle?

My ASR just cuts power when the wheels spin, sometimes a bit more than is needed tbh. But I can drive my car with out constantly lighting up the wheels with it off, few hours with a driving instructor would help if your having issues. ;)

Just had a look at my dash lights again (forgot what the ASR looks like.. :giggle: ...).....ASR shows an amber triangle with an exclamation mark inside it with a circular arrow around the triangle.......

The only ways to tell.........

is to either go to your local Skoda dealer at by looking at the Chassis no they should get a spec list,

or decode the options sticker on the boot floor to the left of the spare wheel,

or post pictures of the abs unit and the no.s on it on the control box side,

or get someone with a decoder VCDS etc to get the info on the ABS control unit from the diagnostics port!

As far as I'm aware that spec/engine should have ASR/EDL/ABS as standard fit.....if your's dosn't and has no ASR switch, either it was an anomoly....or someone has had problems with the OEM unit and refitted a down spec unit and removed the switch!!! B)
