Mini DV camera charging

Featured Replies

Anyone got one of the mini DV cams (the thumb size clone of the Muvi). If so, do you find it takes forever to charge on the PC USB port and needs a mains mini USB supply instead?

I just got one and it seems to take 10 or more hours to charge from the PC and less than 2 hours from the wall charger.

Standard fare, tbh. PC USB ports have a technical output current limitation of 500mA per port (part of the USB specs that they shouldn't put out more current than that). Whereas from the mains, you're not limited by the specs of USB and the mains adapter probably puts out more like 2-2.5A hence charging much faster.

I get it with my phone, when I charge it from the Belkin USB charger in my car it only charges at 500mA which actually still drains the battery when I'm using it for GPS. I need to do the mod that makes it charge at 1A but never got around to it...

If you need to charge from a PC you need a powered hub. As above PC ports are limited to a max, but rarely get near that.

Seems a bit odd is all. The PC USB port should be able to charge it in less than 5 hours in theory, but it took 10 and still was only very partially charged. Full charge on the 1A limited mains charger sorted it out, but did expect to be able to charge from the PC faster.

In the car I have a low current USB charger for the headset and a 1A one for the phone.
