Turbo Going? - can you have a listen pls?

Featured Replies

Started to hear a different sound on the way home on Friday, when putting my foot down on the gas (kind of over pressing the peddle), got a whistle/whine. Can also hear it a bit when parked, worried that it is the turbo going. Can anyone in the know have listen please?

Thanks!!

When you hit about 3k revs at 9 seconds into the video it does sound a bit dodgy. If it's making that high pitched wailing all the time then it's well and truly knackered - like this one:

I take it this is a diesel going by the rev counter?

Thanks, yep 1.9 tdi. Sounds a lot like that, but not as loud.

Oh, and I took the flexi pipe off that I *think* is the intake for the turbo. It has an actuator and paddle on the opening. Could not seem much inside other than soot/oil. Car is W reg on 177,000. Would have to decide if it was worth the cost to replace - love the car, it has looked after me for many miles, but have made the mistake of pouring good money after bad before!

W reg..... is that a 90 or a 110?

It's a 90bhp I think.

Just took it for another spin, sound is like a dentist drill really - guess I should take it to the mechanic in the morning, rather than risking the run down the motorway...

That definitely sounds like its gone. For the 1.9Tdis replacement turbos aren't that expensive though (I've seen members on here pick up reconditioned ones for £250) and only a couple of hours labour to fit.

Being an early 90 it will be a wastegate based turbo too - dunno how that affects pricing.
