MFD2 to Columbus RNS510 swap

Featured Replies

Hi all

I've got a MFD2 and considering Swapping it for a Columbus RNS 510 unit. Will the Columbus unit fit directly the same double din slot without modifying the dash and also will it need any programming or harnesses changed etc??

Thanks

It'll fit the same slot but the fascia trim panels are different shapes - you will need a new one.

It might work without programming but its best to code with VCDS to be on the safe side.

Depending what software version the MFD3 is, you might suffer battery drain issues on a 2005 car. Can be fixed by a new CAN gateway or changing the software on the MFD3. Lots of info here, its been done a few times.

You won't need a new trim, the Columbus is the same shape as the mfd2, you may need coding to get the Sat nav or media display on the maxidot, but if you already have sat nav and it is displaying in the maxidot, or you haven't got maxidot at all, then you won't need coding, great kit, much better than the mfd2, do it!

Sat nav is already built in on my MFD2. is the maxidot the screen in between the instrument cluster?? If so I have one of them. Displays averages/directions/radio etc

If your mfd2 sat nav is displaying on the screen between the clocks you won't need coding, its just a straight forward, simple swap to change to the Columbus sat nav, well worth doing, its miles better than the mfd2 in every way.....

Sweet cheers buddy. It's just the CAN gateway then I guess. to preven the battery draining. Any idea on which I need??

can any one tell me if this unit is compatible with his fl maxdot screen?

can he see in his max dot location or direction when navigation working?

your help please , before he will go and buy it.

Best regards

Should be compatible but he will need the car re-coding so that it knows a sat nav is installed and send instructions to the maxidot display.

I put one in mine the other week all worked fine (new fascia trim needed as Bolero is bigger) then for maxidot VCDS coding was needed to activate this feature. Dealers or helpful forum members can do this. (thanks Magic62)

While this may be right, it wasn't my experience when I swapped out my OEM MFD2 and had a Columbus retrofitted. Firstly, I needed an adaptor for the aerial (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RNS510-MFD3-radio-antenna-adapter-VW-SEAT-RCD510-310-/180852157926?pt=UK_CE_GPS_Accessories_Software_ET&hash=item2a1ba0ede6) but I didn't need a new fascia as the MFD2 and Columbus are the same size/shape.

Once it was installed, the Columbus itself worked really well (it is in a different league to the MFD2) but it didn't communicate with the Maxidot. I only had options for the MFD and basic settings. I no longer had the navigation details or details of what was being played. It may be because my Columbus was from a Superb and not an Octavia, or that my Octavia is a pre-facelift, but I believe that it can be coded so that everything works well again. Only need to find someone around the Gloucestershire area who can code it for me now!

As I said, it may be different with yours but this is what I have found in my experience! Hope it is of some help.

Mine came from a 2011 Superb originally but worked fine bar maxidot bit plug and play a lot of variables to take into account tbh, old Columbus in a old Octavia / new Columbus in a old Octavia / Old Columbus in a new Octavia / new Columbus in a new Octavia. Very broadly speaking. However most combinations are possible some are just not as straight forward as others I didnt need gateway updated or an adaptor for aerial (obviously I needed an OEM GPS antenna which I mounted under dash). Mine was still set for optimisation to Superb when it was coded for maxidot integration. Newer Columbus main difference is it has a LED screen, but they are all a massive upgrade from the lower units and worth every penny/cent.
