Private plate help

Featured Replies

Hello all,

A while back, I sold my car with a private plate on. It was sold to a friend who said I was always welcome to grab the plate back anytime etc.

In searching for this today it seems that I should have put the plate on retention but failed to do so. Question is, what form(s) do I/he need to fill out now to get the private plate back to go on my current car? There are several threads all on this - I would just like a simple answer if possible please.

Many thanks,

If the buyer has registered the car in their name I think you've lost it.

Remember, you don't "own" the number.

Oh, balls.

Is there no way I can 'buy' the plate back from him?

surely he can simply "give" you the reg

same process as if he was selling it to you - minus any transfer of funds

If everyone is in agreement would you not just transfer the plate to your car like any other?

You will need to:

complete a V317 ‘application to transfer or retain a vehicle registration number’ - if the number is being transferred to someone else’s vehicle, then both registered keepers must complete the application

enclose the £80 transfer fee

Also enclose for both vehicles:

the registration certificate or the new keeper supplement with a completed V62 ‘application for a vehicle registration certificate V5C'

a test certificate – needed for cars and motorcycles over three years old, and heavy goods vehicles over one year old

If the new keepers supplement has been stamped by a DVLA local office you’ll need to complete a V62 ‘application for a vehicle registration certificate V5C' before you can apply.

If either vehicle needs taxing, enclose:

a completed V10 ‘application for a tax disc’ or the V11 reminder

a certificate of insurance or valid cover for the vehicle

the payment of vehicle tax

Send the completed application to your nearest DVLA local office.

The cost of vehicle tax

Find your nearest DVLA local office
