Brake Upgrade Info Overload

Featured Replies

Been bitten by the modding bug and have started drawing up a list of mods for my vRS. Obviously one of the must haves is the brake upgrade.

I have searched on here but there is so much info its mashed my brain. I will post what I think is correct if someone could just confirm I have understood it all correctly.

Cheers

I need 312 for the front and 256 for the rear, I can get these from a Mk4 Golf, Mk 1 Octy, or a Mk 1 TT.

If I get these calipers with the carriers then its just a case of swapping over and everything fits as if it was designed to go on the Fabia from the factory.

The only issue I will find is the splashguards might need removing or trimming.

This setup fits under the standard 16" rims and no spacers etc are required.

If I wanted splashguards will a set from any of the donor vehicles fit or is it better to just remove them.

Any other info I have not mentioned would be appreciated.

If anyone could confirm the above is correct that would be great.

Might be worth noting that any of the kits I've saw for the 256mm rear brake upgrade have cost more than the 312mm front brake upgrade, the only reason I mention this is upgrading the rear brakes isn't going to do a huge amount of difference from what I've read and is generally done more as a visual upgrade. The money saved (£315 estimated) could be put to a lot other uses. The kit I bought for the front upgrade - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-AUDI-312mm-calipers-discs-and-pads-MK4-GOLF-TT-S3-/280817621426?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item416208d9b2#ht_500wt_959, really can't rate it highly enough and a similar kit for the rear - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-AUDI-SEAT-SKODA-256mm-REAR-BRAKE-CALIPERS-DISCS-PADS-/280821682309?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item416246d085#ht_500wt_959.

£315?! Wtf lol, I paid £120 for my rears. The bloke I just bought my brembos from was flogging the rears for £100!

Fairly good value to get a 312/256 brake setup IMO, makes a decent improvement to braking & looks.

That kit is for refurbed calipers and carriers so replaced seals etc etc and new discs and pads. Personally I'd go for something like that over 2nd hand calipers etc which would require some attention then the cost of discs and pads to go with it. Except for the likes of Brembo's, I'd take a 2nd hand set of them but thats more down to fact of their price and of such a high build quality

I'm not sure you need the 256 on the rear, unless you are putting something even bigger on the front.

I ran standard rears with 323mm Brembros on the front and it was fine on the road, but did move around a little under very heavy braking on track, so I upgraded to bigger rear discs for that reason only.

Thanks for all the info. So am I right in thinking that upgrading the front and rears to the size I stated is just a straight swap over and will fit inside the standard 16" rims.

The 256 rears are from Octy 1 vRS, Seat Leon Cupra R and Mk4 Golf Anniversary. 312's are usually cheaper. Also you may need an anti squeal kit for the 256 rears which is £80!

Yes a 312mm set up from mk4 golf or TT or Leon will fit straight on and fit (just) under standard 16" wheels.

check out this guide for more info and if you're feeling adventurous fitting instructions!

given 256 rears are smaller than the standard from 288's they'll cause no problems on the rear however as said from what i read it's not an essential upgrade

The rears do make a difference IMO, as stated earlier it stops the squirming under heavy braking, plus it looks cool lol my front and rear calipers cost £220 and brand new discs and pads at £170, worthwhile :)

Am I right in guessing that the standard 16" rims are the smallest you can fit over the 312 front brakes. The reason I ask is I have some 15" steelies with winter tyres on and if they will be a problem I will have to factor in the cost of getting larger wheels for the winter tyres.

yes no chance in the world 15" rims will go over 312s

clearance between caliper and wheel is approx 5mm so a 25mm drop in rim size is a non-no

@PastyBoy

Just had a read on the fitting guide link you posted. It mentions that you can use longer brake hoses but its not necessary. I am thinking of changing to braided hoses at the same time I upgrade the brakes. Would you say its worth getting the longer ones as I am changing anyway or are the standard length more than enough.

Cheers

Either would be fine.

When i bought my TT setup it came with TT hoses which are longer than the standard Fabia ones.

However the Fabia ones reach no problem I couldnt be bothered to change them so the TT ones are still sat in the garage unused.

Normal length Fabia ones don't need to be stretched or anything to fit and mine have now been on for 3 years with no issues what so ever.
