1.6 MPI - What can be done?

Featured Replies

As i've prolly said elsewhere, Im not good with cars - i know how to top up oil and washer fluid and the like but not much more than that!

Never the less, I'd like to know what can be doen to make my car just that little bit more powerfull and get just a bit more performance out of it.

Its a New Octavia (Classic) 1.6MPI. Can it be remapped - jabbasports site only seems to have the vrs and TDIs on there...

Anyone got any ideas along with rough costs?

*Confused* :-/

As a basic rule, a remap is really only worthwhile on its own on a turbocharged car. On a naturally aspirated engine you'd be looking at more traditional tuning methonds such as cams and throttle body upgrades before a remap would really be needed.

Dont bother changing the air filter, the Max Power gang will have you believe that it makes a difference - in reality it'll make it noisy and slower.

Given the potential cost of tuning the 1.6 you'd be better off saving the money until you can change to a 1.8T. ANy Octavia 1.8T can be remapped to the same power as a VRS though the actual figure varies a few bhp from car to car.

The advantage of remapping a non-sporty model such as the Elegance trim level is that you notice more of a difference so the

:iagree:

That said, the 1.6 MPI engine is a direct descendant of the 1.6 unit used in the Golf GTi in the early 80s. Therefore, there are a range of tuning options out there (sports cam, turbo conversions, etc.), unfortunately none of them being as cheap/easy/subtle as a remap.

You can get a Suprchip for a few hundred pounds, but you're looking at maximum gains of about 8bhp so it isn't that cost effective.
