Torque

Featured Replies

Hello

If im honest, Im not totally au fait with engines

I currently drive a 2005 Audi A3 2.0 TDI 138 BHP. I like the power of this. You put the foot down and you get power from low revs. I think the correct phrase is " low end torque " :~) This low end torque seems to be applicable mainly to diesel cars

I remember driving a Honda Accord 2.0 VTEC petrol ( think was 150 BHP ) a couple of years ago and the power in it was not to my liking, you had to rev really really high to get decent acceleration. I was really disssapointed with it and expected more.

Im looking at buying a 2010 / 2011 Skoda Octavia 1.8 TSI **Manual** Hatchback ( elegance spec. )

This seems to have decent torque, well as petrols go anyways :)

Can anyone here tell me the real world experience of the Octavia 1.8 TSI MANUAL with regard to low end torque ?

i.e. Do you have to rev the hell out of it to get decent acceleration ??

I think you'll find it has good low end torque on account of it being turbo charged.

if you find that the .1.8 TSi hasnt got enough torque, a quick remap will take it above the Torque your Audi is currently putting out

^^ Just a note. I don't want to bother with a remap , thanks

This is a surprisingly smooth and flexible engine with its max torque available between 1500rpm and 4500rpm. There is no need to rag it to get decent acceleration and the 0-62 time of 7.8 secs for the Elegance spec - compared with 7.2 secs for the 2.0TSI in the vRs - is pretty good.

Test driving one might not be a bad idea, see what you think.....

In regard to this " max torque available between 1500rpm and 4500rpm "

Would a diesel be something like this also when it comes to torque ? Or not at all

Just go with it. It will beat the Audi and the Honda

Take it. Its a super smooth engine, will not choke on low revs. No need to rev the nuts of it or redline it, great power from 1800-4,500.

VTEC engines are powerful only above 4500-5000rpm until 9000rpm.

Jaysus, didnt know that, thanks.

Thats awful high revs to get a bit of power IMO :)

Id love to blackmagic :hi:

but im in Ireland and there are feck all of these particular 1.8 tsi engines around

any more comments ?

I find I don't often get above 3k rpm as I go through the gears except maybe in 1st (and 3k is about 80mph in 6th gear I think from memory) and I can get along quite happily in 5th at about 30mph and 6th at 40mph. The revs at these speeds are around 1500rpm and the engine doesn't sound/feel laboured at all even on uphills (if you need to accelerate really quickly though, you can change down). The absolute torque is not as much as my old 2L mondeo but holds the torque to much higher revs than the diesel (the diesel was running out of puff above about 3500rpm) and acceleration to 60mph is 7.8s on the Octavia vs 9.6s mondeo. The engine is so much smoother and quieter though that I've sat at 60mph in 3rd for a distance before noticing. I'd say it's a pretty flexible engine and makes for relaxed driving, or some fun when the fancy takes you :-)

any more comments ?

Yes. Torque wil be more evenly spread than in your Audi, and the 1.8T engine has a much, much broader usable rev range, which means less gear changing and makes overtaking and the like much easier. IMHO the 1.8T is much nicer to drive than the 2.0TDi, and I have driven cars with both engines (both in Audis). The 1.8T engine note is much, much, nicer. I had a 2.0 TDi 138 bhp Audi A4 for two and half years and found the experience extremely frustrating. Life's too short.

yet again, excellent replies from the people on this forum, THANKS

So more a less going from my audi 2.0TDI to the Octavia 1.8 tsi will definitely be a step up............in terms of power and acceleration ( which is what I want )

And will just be a slightly different driving style, maybe will just have to rev sligtly higher in the 1.8 tsi

Why did you find it frustrating ?

To be honest, I dont find my 2.0 TDi 138 bhp Audi A3 frustrating

Not even at a Škoda dealer?

Not even at a Sköda dealer?

Nope, not even at a Skoda Dealer

Well in the north of Ireland, yes, but not in the South ( where I am based )

Why did you find it frustrating ?

Nasty clattering engine - all the torque in one lump - forever stirring the gearbox - poor fuel consumption for a diesel and against what I was promised by Audi (overall 41 mpg) - IMHO this car was underpowered for it's size and weight.

And the seats were awful and the S-line suspension way too stiff (nowhere near as good as my current Octavia VRS). To sum it up, very little driving pleasure.

Oh, the steering was very precise, the car had very good grip and the handling was secure. Those are the only good things I can remember about the car.

^^^^ Fair enough :)

IMHO I feel the 1.8 TSI unit is a gem both in performance and cost...

The engine is smooth and pulls well, if driven carefully will reward with 40+ MPG on a run.

Petrol is around 40 pence a gallon cheaper than derv so the diesel economy argument is getting less, I only do 10,000 a year

The 2.0 PD gets 51 mpg over the 1.8 TSI s 38mpg so would save me about £300 a year in fuel

I bought an Octavia 58 reg 1.8 TSi for £5200 its truly immaculate, the equivalent oil burner was £1500 more

No timing belt to worry about and no clatter at the lights.

Its the best car I have ever owned.... full stop!

thanks for the feedback pc1212.

Thats what I like to hear.

I only do 7000 miles a year

Just out of interest, what engine cars have you driven in the past, just so as I can see what your comparing it with ?

Last car a Bora 1.9 TDI 115 BHP, prior to that a TT 225 BHP, then a Passat 130TDI

Been looking for something to get the best of both worlds..... the TSi, is precisely that!

However you need to drive one, and these are my thoughts

Go and have a test drive...
