Changing only the Shocks/dampers lowers the ride height?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I read in another online forum that if you only change the shocks/dampers in your car to aftermarket ones & leave the oem springs, the car will still be lowered by around 1-2cms, is this true? as i would love to just have a super tiny drop in ride height, anyone over here just changed the dampers to aftermarket ones & got a slightly lower ride height?

Thanks..

Not true.

The ride height is determined by the spring - that's what's physically supporting the weight of the car, not the damper.

At the front however, there is a chance that your replacement (presumably aftermarket) dampers may have the spring cup located at a slightly different place on the body of the damper vs. OE which may give you a minor up/down difference to stock, but its unlikely. At the rear the damper unit is physically separated from the spring so it will only be the spring that determines the ride height.

HTH.
