Starting and high revs when hot

Featured Replies

Hi I have a 2000 Felicia 1.3 magic the first start of the day is always tricky and sometimes it don't start and have to leave it a few hours to try again but when it does start at first the revs are very low around 750rpm which it sometimes stalls if im not careful but when it warmed up the revs run at about 1500rpm which is far to high, I have changed the temp sensor but there's no change i believe it could be something to do with the choke but not sure what could be causing this and how can i fix it as cheap as possible im a long way off from a mechanic but will have a go at most basic jobs.

This same problem with the 1.3mpi engine seems to be cropping up on here a lot but I've yet to see a straightforward answer. There are a lot of people finding the revs are dropping when starting from cold, mine still fluctuates quite a bit when idling even after 10 minutes of driving but after an hour or so it's fine.

If mine stalls soon after starting then I can't get it started again without rolling it which makes me think starting it puts a massive load on the battery and unless you can get it started and drive around for a bit for the alternator to charge it, it doesn't have enough juice to do another start.

The latest suggestion (which I'm going to try with mine) is a FULL clean of the throttle body including fitting a new gasket and getting the throttle zeroed with VAG-Com. I just need to get hold of a laptop I can use with my cable and I'll see if that makes any difference.

Like Chicken Eyebrow said another dirty throttle body problem.

Alot of people myself included try lots of other things like changing temp sensors and servicing but the throttle body is oftn over looked.

It should really be part of the service schedule, maybe every 20k with the air filter. If the oil is changed every 5-6k the problem shouldn't happen as often as it looks like the breathers from the valve cover are the source of the carbon.

The gasket for the mpi's throttle body is only £1.80 from Skoda

I hope this info helps
