Funky temperature gauge

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a Skoda Octavia (2000) that has a temp.gauge that behaves funky.

Normaly it shows normal temperatures.

Going home from work I see the gauge rise, next time I look its "cold".

After stoping at a shop for a few minutes it shows nearly normal temp and a kilometer later its "cold" again.

Is it the temperature sensor, thermostat or wiring problem?

Temperature sendor I would guess, or loose connection to this.

Temperature sendor I would guess, or loose connection to this.

Today I stoped halfway to work and shut down the engine.

Started again and the gauge was almost at normal temp.

Then during a few minutes it fell slowly to just above "cold".

Very likely the coolant temp sender. A common fault and fortunately cheap to replace.

Also worth checking fluid levels ;)

Done that.

Not that I am inferring in any way that there is any similarity, but a Ford Escort I recently sold on had a temperature gauge that did an excellent impression of a rev counter. One minute it would not register anything, the next it would be in the normal position and then rise to off the scale and then back down again.

The temperature sender was at fault having broken at the electrical connection end with the result being the intermittent earthing of the current to the engine block and hence the gauge needle flying all over the place in line with a dodgy connection and vibration from the engine.

Have your local garage check it and as said above it won't be expensive.
