Rear wheel bearing.

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I have a low droning sound from nearside rear at around 35-40 mph, I am sure it is the bearing. Would it be difficult to change this myself, some people say I will need a puller and press, others say it is easy. My car is a octavia 1.9tdi 56 reg, which I am led to believe is a bit of a cross of mkI

and mkII. Thanks in anticipation.

Should be a MK2, not any common suspension components with the MK1 (or a lot else either).

I'd check rear tyres first, check the blocks of tread on the inside edge aren't worn unevenly.

Failing that the bearing is a bolt on component, no press required. However you do need spine tools to remove the brake carrier and a large spline to undo the centre hub bolt (M14-M16) which is torqued to 180nm and 180 degrees which requires a very big bar.

I've just gone through this and it was the tyres. Inside edge turned into 50 pence pieces! New tyres on and geometry sorted out and car is now silent.

I will bet its the above , just had two new tyres and geometry done all silent now... The tyre i took off had bad stepping / saw-toothing on the inner edges.

i THOUGHT WHEEL BEARING AT FIRST it sounds just like it !
