Wheel weights

Featured Replies

I changed to summer tyres today and took the opportunity to check the weight of my wheels.

I'm sure some of you will be interested! (Only here!)

Antares Alloy 6x15 with new Dunlop SP01 185/60R15 tyres - as supplied 15.4kg each

Enzo B Alloy 6x15 with Continental WinterContact TS800 185/60R15 86T - after 5000km - 15.45kg front, but 15.75kg rear!

So the front tyres have lost an additional 300g after 5000km. That sounds like a lot to me. Although they had both lost the Enzo badge - that couldn't weigh more than a few grammes. Any thoughts?

OK - so it was only me that found it interesting!

But I couldn't find any figures on wheel of tyre weights - and I'm sure they must make a difference to handling and fuel consumption...

As a comparison, the stock-rims for a VRS weighs 10.49 kg... without any tire xD!

Another year and 25000km later, the wheels weigh in as follows:

Antares Alloy 6x15 with new Dunlop SP01 185/60R15 tyres - all 15.2kg - 200g less after 17000km

Enzo B Alloy 6x15 with Continental WinterContact TS800 185/60R15 86T - all 15.8kg (bit wet) - 50-350g more(!) after 14000km cumulative

So your front tyres behave as expected but rear ones grow rubber back?

Must be dirt or the such.

There were a few stones in the deep treads of the winter tyres.

And then there's the margin of error on the scales.

Indeed :)

Your weighing shows how much performance can be gained from fitting ultra light alloys...

I found it surprisingly difficult to find the weights of rims and tyres while sourcing my winter wheels. Hence the thread...

Nice one buddy.. I would love to know the difference in weight between Octavia vRS Spider alloys and something like Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2's.. as I am thinking of buying some for the lighter weight :)

15 inch pro race's can be as little as 5kg.

Does it really matter,

Its the total weight of the 'Race wheel and tyre type fitted'

against the total weight of the 'Standard wheel and tyre type' that will matter.

Then Brake Cooling, strength or lack of strength between the 2 different set ups that will matter as much as weight.

Is it for track and strip use & road?

Strip use and road.. I currently have Octavia Spider alloys on my car which is why I am so interested to know exactly how much weight I'd be losing.

Weigh your wheel/tyre then,

and say exactly what size & type of wheel and tyre you are looking at using, then someone can maybe weigh theirs if similar to what you are after.
